Draculaβs Daughter (1936)
I watch this one at least once a year. Gloria Holden's performance as Marya Zaleska is, in my opinion, the template for later cinematic angsty vampires, but with more style and class. Zaleska is a noble demon, driven to her own damnation by a curse not of her choosing. Sadly, despite this, it's not as well known as other Universal horror films, especially given that it's the only direct sequel to Dracula (1931), even featuring Edward Van Sloan's Van Helsing. I think it gets upstaged by the later sequels a bit, and suffers as a result.

White Feathers, CrimsonΒ Leaves
The livingβ―keepβ―more secrets than the deadβ¦Β So, as y'all might recall from the newsletter last year, I spent a few months before the holidays writing a new Legend of the Five Rings novel, White Feathers, Crimson Leaves. It's new ground for me; away from the familiar characters of the City of the Rich Frog, and into the wilds of the Unicorn lands, with a whole new set of characters, including Yogo Shuko, an embittered Scorpion Wardmaster. As the blurb says: In a remote corner of the Emerald Empire, a ghostly harbinger of doom and death haunts those who claim ownership over the forest village of Red Grove.
Got a new book coming out in a month! It's got ghosts, a dog, and a little man made out of paper...

Under The Stairs
βIt is in the cupboard, then?β Palman Vordenburg asked, as he checked the cylinder of his revolver. A tall, rawboned man, with hair the colour of cornsilk and a face that had seen too much violence to be called handsome, he eyed the cupboard in question with a dubious glare. βYou are certain of this? Only it seems very small.β βIβm told it goes back a way,β Burchill said. He studied his pocket watch as he spoke. βBigger on the inside, that sort of thing. These old houses are all labyrinths of one sort or another, in my experience.β
