If I made any mistake, please reply with corrections!] I wanna example, and illustrate the cliche: "You can't be made to do something you don't wish to do under hypnosis" This is beginner advice given to invite people into the community, & inspire them with a suggestion that runs counter to the cultural representation of the practice of hypno. Strictly speaking, it holds true in most circumstances. In most people, in most sessions, their experience with hypno isn't going to violate some personal belief or desire. [Below this paragraph lies two line graphs roughly describing the relation between 1) time/exposure to hypnosis, and suggestibility/efficacy, and 2) difficulty of a suggestion, and its ability to be fulfilled. Each uses three different lines, labeled "general/average," "high responder," and "somnambulist." Average people have generally lower suggestibility and a lower degree of fulfillment from more difficult suggestions. High responders are a bit more suggestible and have a slightly higher degree of fulfillment from difficult suggestions. Somnambulists experience the highest suggestibility and fulfillment from difficult suggestions.] [continued in next slide]

[continuation of alt text] I'm gonna use a little bit of dated language here, because it calls back to some older wisdom about the types of subjects you wanna worry most about. - "Somnambulist" regularly refers to one who sleepwalks, but in hypno terms can mean one who's naturally hypersuggestible. The way they interpret and process and experience suggestions is naturally very strong & profound. Hypnosis is usually very powerful on these types of people. For a newer hypnotist, or especially one not versed in the practice of hypnosis, this can be a mild or even moderate risk. Often times, hypnotists get overly comfortable adding flourishes or being overly empathic with their language & suggestions, since many subjects you encounter are developed in exercising their agency & interpretation of suggestions, or don't find suggestions deeply effective in the time you're meeting them. When developing suggestions for a hypnotee, setting up optimal styles of language & methods of inducing & deepening trance is the first things you'll usually do, with minimal or full cooperation & participation from your partner. With people who respond highly to hypno, or natural somnambulists, you're able to expedite of eschew much of this down to a minimum. If a particularly unscrupulus hypnotist meets a rather vulnerable subject as described above, it is not uncommon for them to become a target of abuse (forced ownership, long-term attachments, isolation & cult/harem tactics) It is not always the hypnosis itself that is the key issue there. It is the mere promise of hypnosis & extraordinary effects that can be in short supply, which makes coercion & control easier for bad actors in the space. Hypnotists you may think of as moral or upstanding may be less so when exposed to a high responder with an obvious, accessible memory or altered common sense effect, among other things. [continuation of alt text] But even beyond those bad actors, incompetence on the part of a hypnotist can lead vulnerable, bright-eyed people to experience things too vividly, or to be brough somewhere they aren't prepared to handle. Hypnosis is a very vulnerable process, and it sucks to have to adjust, correct, or even reprimand someone's forced imagery when it's undesirable. If it's bad or wrong enough, it can be traumatic. It can ruin & stop someone's development as a subject instantly, permanently. Finally, onto subjects who's carelessly developed open effects. - Open effects, essentially meaning without safety or context-based conditioning. If there are made obvious in a social situation, it is common to see uninitiated people raching for them to investigate in whichever manner they were indicated. Sometimes in our circles, people will poke & prod at the effect without even considering to ask if that's welcome. Having to stand guard over your own profoundly personal conditioned effects can be troublesome or exhausting, even a little isolating when setting boundaries people may not even understand. For your average person, in an average situation, these risks are fairly minimal. Uncommon, easy to navigate around. There's simply a lot of risk factors to take into account regarding any potential subject, & knowing plus accounting for all of them takes several conversations. Realistically, these conversations are not taken extensively, because both parties usually are either accepting or ignoring risk factors that probably don't apply. *Probably! [continuation of alt text] But our conventional cliches don't currently work to protect the more vulnerable in our spaces, who deserve respect & to be cherished/protected for their ability to respond strongly to hypnosis, rather than takn advantage of for a cheap thrill. Setting false expectation about what hypnosis (or the mere promise/idea of it) can achieve in all cases inevitably hurts people; causes miscommunications between the experienced & ill-equipped.. that's all, really. - Test clicker response *early* to make sure the subject can handle it.
- If clicker training, *also* train the null response if a clicker is in the hands of someone else. (Irritation, indifference, etc.)
