The reason the Middle East has so much oil is the same reason it’s all stuck there now A continental collision trapped oil within what is today Iran. The same collision explains why that oil is trapped behind the Strait of Hormuz now

Fascinating new piece by @sipappas.bsky.social looking at the geology behind the geopolitics:

The brainstorming idea is super important IMO. I would probably be more productive if I used AI for some parts of my job, but I'm sufficiently productive now and AI would make me less intelligent, and some of the busy work I'd likely farm off to an LLM is what I need to let ideas percolate.

Truly bizarre to my brain whose technology expectations were set in the early 2010s to think that Apple is the most consumer friendly tech company.

Following bike racing lets you see athletes completely physically empty in ways you really don't get in a lot of other sports.

It'd be a correct argument. The question is to what extent it'd be useful vs just preaching to the choir.

Optimal driving really is just hang out in the right lane and find a truck to draft. This is why adaptive cruise control is one of the few modern driving innovations that's actually useful.

Tbh the coal plants under 202c orders are a pretty small percentage of total national coal capacity. I'd put a good chunk of it on higher lng prices (2024 was a very low year) affecting bids/dispatch

MISO currently hanging out at 50% renewables / 63% zero-carbon. Conditions are pretty optimal so this isn't going to be a regular thing for a while but we do in fact love to see it.

It's really a tech driven algorithmic bubble. FM was better audio quality but AM had more range, so the music went on FM and the talk shows on AM. Also why you could get a lot of AM stations in rural areas, presenting an interesting thought experiment: what if all the NPR affiliates had been AM.
