New bowerbird paper out, we asked whether male great bowerbirds care about the light environment around the bower where they display to females. Short answer: not really. What they do care about is having a display arena with strong visual contrast on the ground. 🐦 tinyurl.com/2v7rycdz

Nice commentary on our recent paper on crow stick tool use. To add one piece of information: One of our crows did, in fact, sometimes use the substrate (i.e., the apparatus desk) to adjust its gripβ€”the crow for which stick re-grasping by tossing was too subtle to be reliably detected.

Whenever I have fieldwork I tend to go to Cotswolds, Trespass and Mountain Warehouse. They are probably the easiest to find in any typical UK cities. I have great experience with Cotswolds staff in particular! Although I haven't tried myself I've heard good things about Decathlon as well.

NEW PAPER: Dartford warblers use nest materials based on local habitat, but material type doesn't affect insulation or breeding successβ€”suggesting flexible, functional nest-building across environments.
