Species Slowdown: Is Nature’s Ability to Self-Repair Stalling? When scientists recently analyzed hundreds of studies of ecosystems, they were surprised to see a marked slowing in the rate of species turnover. If new species don’t replace old ones, they say, ecosystems may have less flexibility to respond to habitat loss and climate change.

Scientists have long predicted ecosystems would shift in response to warming, with some species moving out and others moving in. But a major new study has found the rate of turnover is declining, suggesting nature may be losing its ability to self-repair.

Angled-down image of a frog perched on a brown leaf and facing left. The frog's principal ground color is black, with yellowish-white stripes running from the nose through the eye and down the back to the legs. A second stripe runs along the lower jaw, terminating at the front legs. The legs are a light brown and there is a triangular flashmark of bright yellow at the top of the thigh. The frog also has some dark brown blobs attached to the lower back - four tadpoles, hanging on until the male frog can transport them to a suitable source of water.

Know what doesn't suck right now, or ever? Nature. This Pale-striped Poison Frog (Ameerega hahneli) was hopping across an open area at our NE Peru field station, on his way to find a suitable wet place to deposit his tadpoles (such as the axils of a bromeliad). #herps #frogs #NaturePhotography 🌿

Looking like a cross between a monkey and a black panther, the tayra is one of the coolest creatures I've encountered in Costa Rica. Having seen them only a handful of times and photographed them even less, it's always a privilege spotting one.

This encounter occurred in Corcovado NP.

She’s raised almost $20m to help Minnesota – she thinks you can do it too Ashley Fairbanks launched Stand with Minnesota as ICE raids rocked her home town – now donations are pouring in, and families’ rent is being paid

I need to address this immediately, because I am WAY too Minnesotan to ever claim credit for this.

I built a thing to point the fire hose of people's generosity in the right direction. That's it.

I am thankful for the piece, because hopefully it means people will donate more money.
