At the time of my book, fae mining technology would be approximately equivalent to 16th century technology on Earth, which is to say there is some technology, but a lot of manual labour is still required to extract the ore. Certainly no big modern machines to speed things up.

Apparently I use this a lot less than I thought I did.
I donβt know why I imagined them bigger (probably the influence of beedrill being wedged in my head even though I know thatβs not the inspiration for thisβ¦), but yeah, corgi size probably makes more sense for something that lives in an actual hive.
Thank you. It was my first commission, and they did so good. I love it π
A significant number of Dark fae buildings are built almost entirely out of the lower quality ore, so if it ever looks like theyβre going to run out, there would be a hard debate to be had as to whether the buildings are worth more than the metal in it.
To a certain extent, maraan and zoraan can be melted back down and recycled, or simply re-forged. Re-forging old metalwork is a major source of alloy for those blacksmiths in the neutral territories with limited access to actual ingots.
Thatβs because while Fae has old extraction methods for now, Earth has modern ones, and while it might take a little while to catch up, I can absolutely see the fae making use of some of the humanβs techniques (machines!) to increase ore extraction, and reduce the amount of manual labour required.

As it currently stands, thereβs not much risk of running out of bothiir, as itβs so commonplace around Fae, and thereβs only so much can be collected through their manual means.
However, the best quality pits could end up at risk of over-extraction once the portals to Earth reopenβ¦
At the end of the day, without the miners, youβd have no maraan or zoraan, so they probably have more leverage regarding pay than your average working class fae. Though the ones who work the smelters probably have the upper hand in that regard, being as they know the βrecipesβ for making the alloy.
Because of that, miners look out for each other, both in the pits, and out in general society. That includes the crew leaders, who make a point of looking after the men under them, even against those of the upper classes who look down on them. If anyone in Fae had a union it would be the miners.
Itβs a brutally hard job to do all this by hand. Miners are therefore all pretty damned strong (both physically and mentally), but itβs the sort of job that can wear out your body with time. Injuries are not uncommon, as all it takes is a falling slab and a moment of inattention.
However, among those, itβs considered a good, respectable job, in large part because itβs stable year-round work, and the pay is both decent and more reliable than many other working class jobs.

Missed yesterday due to craziness, so double posting today.
Fae society is split into multiple classes. Working in the pits it solidly the realm of the lower of the working classes.
Nothing for Glaucus (older, broad-built, gold-scaled merman, tan skin in the few areas heβs not scaled), MΓ²rag (thin, vampire, straight coal-black hair, always dresses in green), or the beasts either. The (black) panther actually changes a little in Georges story, gaining a patch of white fur.
Nothing for Charlie or Will yet (the joys of shapeshifters - which form do you choose?). Will is especially challenging, because his face changes *all the time*. Itβs a defining feature that he very rarely shows his own. George and the panther have become quite adept at recognising him anyway.
Hey, I actually have art for art day now!
I shared this recently, but I wonβt turn down the chance to show it again.

Another Anneke snippet, this time in letter form (and yes, the nested brackets are 100% their author calling themselves out because dear gods do I do that so damn much xD)

I prefer to write happy endings, but in reality, mine probably end up about 50:50. Though the happy ones usually have some measure of sadness in them, and the sad/tragic ones have at least some measure of hope.
Agreed. But then a lot of things would have been brutal without modern methods. I canβt imagine farming would be particularly easy either (though perhaps not as bad as mining/quarrying).
Oh those are gorgeous! Beautiful artwork, too.
*goes to google the link between galena and kohl* We humans do like to put heavy metal places they donβt belong, donβt we?
Anywayβ¦so now they do π give me a bit while I go figure it out. Probably the lower grade ore dust gets gathered by the miners and separated out to sell on to chemists?
Oh cool, I didnβt know that about limestone. I wonder why it gets harder with time? Must be some chemistry going onβ¦
Generously *and* reluctantly. Do they have to share it, even if they donβt want to? What do they get in return?
