It's a nice reminder to just follow your instincts when creating something and keep your editorial brain on pause until its complete.
I hadn't even realised how much I mentioned it in that show until that moment. I bet that if I set out to write a show about mental health to begin with it wouldn't have felt as authentic and I would probably have botched it.
I find this a much more satisfying process than trying to contrive a meaningful piece of work from the outset.
After a show last week, a dude came up to me and said 'thanks for speaking about mental health'.
I never write a show with a theme in mind. I just get on stage and talk about what I care about most at that time. It's only when I reflect on all the material later that I see a theme has emerged.
My Comedy Festival show this year is all about dealing with the pressures of parenthood and learning to not neglect yourself when caring for others... BUT WITH HEAPS OF JOKES!
