π¬ New insights from gut-immune-brain research π
A study with our network's @alexmsalmeida.bsky.social uncovers a "hiddenβ gut bacterial group found in higher levels in healthy people.
Could this be key to microbiome health and future probiotic innovation? ππ¦

We're still running this survey w/the Center for MINDS investigating factors that produce tangible creative insights from psychedelics. We unfortunately received >10k responses from bots, so we're no longer providing payment, but your responses will help science!

Some additional clarity (not remotely reassuring) regarding the omnishambolic attempts at restructuring at UKRI...
The pause of response mode funding will have a huge impact on ECRs who are not yet fellowship ready.When researchers leave academia they rarely return. Clarity on when RM will reopen is urgently needed & transitions to the new model need to avoid investment gaps that disproportionally affect ECRs
We need to be shouting about the effects of this on junior researchers from the roofs, writing to our MPs. We are risking a "missing generation" of researchers.

Dear peers:
PLEASE add housing conditions of your animals to the methods. It MATTERS if you house 2 or 5 mice in a cage, if they smell other mice (sex), if it is cold or warm in the room, if you house and breed your WT and KO models together etc.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Turns out that if you use a broom to scratch yourself everyone thinks you're a weirdo but if a cow does it they end up in the cover of Current Biology
Shift the govt wants at UKRI - and its new CEO wants - already in evidence as it pauses some funding calls.
UKRI says it is in a "period of transition" after spending review, as it aligns more funding to "national priorities" and economic growth.

Exciting times here at UCL!
GLP-1 agonists (eg Ozempic) are showing promise to reduce alcohol drinking and perhaps opioid use. This is, of course, a potential therapeutic success which arises from the random walking of science, not an βefficientβ directed research program.
Beautiful paper! Somebody should do it in then viscerosensory brainstem.

Happy New Year folks! π
What are you looking forward to in your neuroendocrine research this year?
π¬ Let us know in the comments & we'll share how the BSN can support you in your work.
We need to establish an acceptable proper timeline for the late 20th/early 21st C.
* 'Last year' = 2023-2025
* 'A couple of years ago' = after Lockdown
* 'A few years ago' = between 2004 and Lockdown
* 'About ten years ago' = 1994-2014
2025 was the year we stopped debating whether paying peer reviewers might work and started showing that it does.
2026 will bring waves of innovation to GLP-1 medicines from mechanisms to modalities to molecules delivery systems and new indications. #weightloss #obesity A glimpse of the.future here www.nature.com/articles/s41...
