This is a black-and-white photograph of a quiet riverside scene, calm and reflective in mood. In the lower foreground there is a grassy bank that slopes gently down toward the water. The grass looks short and slightly rough, with a narrow concrete or stone platform extending out at the water’s edge. Sitting on this platform is a lone fisherman. He appears bundled in a thick jacket and a hat, suggesting cool weather. He sits on a small folding chair, leaning slightly forward in a relaxed, patient posture as he watches his fishing line. His fishing rod extends outward over the water. Beside him are a few pieces of fishing gear, a bag, a small box, and possibly a landing net resting near the edge of the platform. The river in front of him is very still, creating clear reflections. The water mirrors the fisherman, the trees, and the sky, giving the scene a symmetrical, glass-like quality. Across the water stand two tall, leafless trees with delicate, branching silhouettes. Their thin branches spread upward and outward like lace against the sky. Because the trees have no leaves, the intricate network of twigs and branches is clearly visible. Their reflections stretch downward into the water. Beyond the trees is a quiet suburban background. Low houses and buildings sit scattered along the far bank, with fences, telephone poles, and wires running across the scene. Everything feels distant and subdued, softened by the monochrome tones. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and contemplative. The lone fisherman, the bare trees, and the calm reflective water create a sense of stillness, like a quiet moment of solitude beside the river. Finally our picture is finished with a simple, white border frame.

Tall native grasses - Toetoe - wave atop the black sand dunes of Ocean Beach, Kāwhia. It's yet another awe-inspiring sunset. These tussocks are quite tough, knowing how to bend with the winds of change (literally) along this stretch of West Coast beach. Toetoe possess saw-like 'teeth' (the edges of the serrated leaf can cut the skin), lending to a nickname of 'cutty grass'. Their form, according to one website is "drooping, flowing".
