I get a lot of questions these days about data from BLS and other agencies. Some of this is about fears of political interference. Some of it is about the reliability of the data, especially in light of recent big revisions. In a story today, I tried to tackle both.

Hello Bluesky! We're the Washington Post data team. We dig through government records, social media, campaign finance reports, weather maps, and any other data we can dig up, download, FOIA or create. Then, we share what we find with you.

We've worked on a lot in the past year. A few highlights 🧡

Most homeowners say their housing costs is affordable, while most renters say they are not

we never publish a column without making sure it answers the five W's

if/when?
why?
what?
how much have you got?
have you got it, do you get it, if so how often?
which do you choose, the hard or soft option?

I'm going to write one long thread over the next couple of days about the people I worked with at the Post. They deserve the extra time and attention. I'll start with someone you likely know well: @roncharles.bsky.social 1/TK

Paige’s last story for us, now atop the homepage, shows what we lost.

She could have done a quick hit on Oz telling Americans to delay retirement, but instead delivered a comprehensive piece rich in policy analysis, data, voices of real people and a rare non-TV interview with Oz wapo.st/4rHUCC6

Haven't seen a sports-specific starter pack for Washington Post folks affected by recent layoffs so created one below - please show them your support and give a follow (let me know if I've missed anyone too!)

But it was Bad Bunny’s defiant, two-word statement at the Grammys β€” β€œICE out” β€” that thrust him into the inflamed national debate over the aggressive tactics of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And his dedication of the award to immigrants who β€œleave their home, land, their country, to follow their dreams” stood as an implicit rebuke of the president’s anti-immigrant rhetoric.

In the way that he recently made a very public statement against ICE at the Grammys!

The weirdest thing about reading financial journalist is their love of the phrase β€œup and to the right”. I’m no time series expert but I guess I wasn’t worried about the β€œto the right” bit. Thought that was kind of non-negotiable

The Post was foolish enough to unleash a bevy of the world’s most talented multi-disciplinary journalists out there for their competition to scoop up. These are some of the most hard working and skilled people I know.

Save this one and reshare it please! πŸ“Š

Don’t forget about Daniel @sadbumblebee.buzz himself, who is a brilliant and compassionate writer, climate reporter, and developer β€” among many other talents.

Tim Meko - Visual Journalist & Graphics Editor - Tim Meko

News: I was cut yesterday in a newsroom-wide layoff affecting 300+ staff at The Washington Post.

I spent the last decade leading and building the award-winning Graphics team. I'll miss them.

I'm now exploring senior graphics, cartography, or leadership roles. Intros welcome.

I just learned that The Post fired Marty Weil. I wasn't in the newsroom much, but when I was, he came in for his evening shifts, he would come through and say hello to literally everyone there. A really great guy, and a true sign of what The Post is giving up.

For nearly a century, the @washingtonpost’s foreign correspondents have been on the ground for the world’s most pressing stories. Now, our desk is facing potential steep cuts. Washington needs us. The world needs us. If you read us and need us, please watch this video and share.

Former tech reporter Pranshu and I worked with his predecessor as India bureau chief, the fearless Gerry Shih, on a Pulitzer-finalist series about that country’s domination of US tech giants. Gerry now leads Israel coverage, and both of their jobs are at risk. #SavethePost, tell Jeff Bezos.

Emerging from mat leave to say that serving as a foreign correspondent for the @washingtonpost was the honor of a lifetime.

Our reporters worldwide put their lives on the line to dig up what would otherwise stay buried.

It's not a product. It's a public service. #SaveThePost
