I suppose the more interesting logic behind *that* decision is, for one, I've hated my given name for as long as I can remember (no deep reason, I just don't like it), and I did some research and found out James was occasionally used as a women's name until the 90s or so.

In college I started having a Gender Crisis, and socially lived as a trans man for a long time. I chose "James" because it's masculine name that I really like, and I also liked that it's a common name.

I detransitioned some time ago now, but I kept the name in the divorce 💀

And even when he does get close with everyone...I feel like it's a pretty Important part of Al's story to he struggles to truly connect and open up even with those he loves

I think it's hard to interrogate if your beliefs are good for you and those around you if you can't even describe why you believe that or how it makes sense

even being able to do that isn't a fail-safe, but I think it helps

and I'm aware not everyone has a special interest in religion and religious studies (hi), but, especially given how I grew up, I just...I believe it's important to know where your beliefs come from, the logic behind them, y'know?

I have my opinions, I landed where I did for a reason, but...

on one hand, I'm aware that—okay, I think this is actually a hot take, but—I believe that some form of agnosticism is actually the historical norm. people absorbed vague beliefs from the dominate religion of their culture, but often in a practical sense people didn't wade into the weeds a whole lot

for added context, I was raised in a pretty strict Evangelical household; yet, even so, there wasn't actually...a lot of religion there?

I was basically told being gay is evil, fiction is dangerous, and Jesus loves me. but I couldn't actually tell you anything about Christianity

I don't know how I feel about beliefs proliferating out into the population, and people don't really seem to question where they come from, or the logic behind it, or why they even believe what they do...

not that this is remotely a new phenomena whatsoever, but it makes me feel. hmph
