I know how you feel. Honestly, I'm in a similar position now. Freelancing is hard, creative work is hard, and freelancing as a creative is impossible.
You can absolutely work on scores remotely, I've done that a bunch too.
When you say dead zone - do you have colleges? Schools that teach media?

I was there a few years back, here's what I did. I found 10 YouTube channels making film-related vids in my city and I reached out. 1 got back to me and has in the last 5 years become a great friend. I've scored a bunch of their short films, won some awards, made some money.
