Time for my annual trip to a place where there are more dogs than people.
Iβm Checkpoint Lead for the very first checkpoint, Yentna. This year I get to see mushers fresh. At Safety, where Iβve been the last few years, I usually see themβ¦less fresh π
The dogs always look good though β€οΈπ

I get this. I have the vague concept in my mind for what I want, but havenβt seen it resolved yet.

Thank you! (and I really hope you took my response tongue-in-cheek as intended).
Do you have your whole presentation recorded anywhere?

Was missing Luta (Rota) today, so I made tinaktak for dinner. I put a Colorado twist on it and used ground elk π

A whooper swan with its neck bent down to drink water.
These swans are so large that when they are grazing in fields itβs hard to tell if you are approaching a field of swans or sheep when driving the ring road.
Swans are not an animal I associate with the phrase βfriendly to humansβ, but the whoopers in RekjavΓk were just that. Usually when Iβm in Iceland itβs breeding season, so they are paired off, building nests, grazing in distant fields, and want nothing to do with humans. This was a treat!

I have a bunch on the list, but I can only fit in a limited amount, so feedback on priorities/ species people like helps. Iβll likely do a βfirst/representativeβ sauropsida, archsosaur, dinosaur, saurisichian, theropod, maniraptoran, avialae, and passerine. So suggest away!

Iβm planning on starting the bird version of this. All organisms will stay the same up to Archaethyrus, then we go down the bird line. Any species you feel are a must to depict in the bird line? I have a few in mind (archaeopteryx is one of course), but Iβm curious what you are interested in π

A couple of fulmars, white and grey birds with unique bills, sit close to one another as they look to the left out to sea. Another fulmarβs head is blurred in the background.
Northern fulmars in northeastern Iceland. They may look like gulls, but are in the family of tubenoses (Procellariiformes) which includes them, shearwaters, various petrels, and albatross.
Like others in their family, these birds are known for projectile vomiting a dietary stomach oil for defense.

Two grey archaeopteryx on a branch together with the male presenting his mate with a delicious grub.
Figured that the habitat Archaeopteryx lived in was likely not resource abundant. Therefore it likely took male investment to raise chicks. Being pair-bonding, sexual dimorphism was probably minimal, thus why they look alike.
A sweet little drawing I did for my husband in 2010. Happy βI care about youβ day everyone β€οΈ

An extinct muntjac-like deer with branched antlers.
Palaeoplatyceros hispanicus- a muntjac-like deer from the Middle Miocene of Spain. Numerous antlers found on Otero Hill in Palencia allow to trace the age-related dimorphism of these animals. The illustration shows an adult, possibly even old, animal and a younger deer in the background.

Pleistocene steppe bison Bison Priscus. Ancestor of modern bisons.
Pleistocene steppe bison Bison Priscus. It inhabited Europe, Asia, and North America until the early Holocene and is the ancestor of modern European bison and American bison.
I'm not sure if it's noticeable, but I was inspired by ancient images of bison and Altamira and other caves.
