Maurer is considered a pioneer in the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in theoretical chemistry. The approaches he has developed are important for computer-aided materials research and can also be transferred to other fields.

Benjamin Kaupp @MPI-NAT & Olivia Kendall @unibonn.bsky.social have discovered that sea urchin & salmon regulate sperm motility differently than mammals. Previously, it was assumed that sperm motility was regulated via a universal mechanism in all living organisms.
