...also at CMO HQ in recent days, a few 2026 paddlers to keep the CEO ticking over. Clouded Drab has appeared this week, along with several Pammene giganteana (Early Oak Gall Moth) - to the FUN lure - and several Small Quakers too.

One of the elite macros of early spring has to be Pine Beauty. A proper bobby-dazzler of a moth, cloaked in intricate patterned shades of orange, rust, red & white. Still scarce here (maybe two a year), this is the 2nd earliest at CMO.

As lovely as Russian WFG are, when you see them amongst Greenlands, they look almost bland compared to the beauty of their cousins. Greenlands really are an absolute delight. Such an elegant looking goose (that olive tone is perfection & that coral orange bill ๐ŸคŒ)...

Chiff-chaffing & kronking were the highlights of a wander around the Bridgewater Canal on a beautiful early March morning. Not much beats hearing the first Chiffy of the spring but the wonderfully deep, resonant rasping almost echo-y sound of Ravens is magnificent.

Sunny morning flockette of Nuthatches! At least three (maybe four) cavorting around & about earlier. Smart as you like...

No, haven't done that yet but I'll do them now. I did email the guy I'm sure will have ringed them (he does the Mute Swans around the Quays + Black-headed Gulls) ๐Ÿ‘

Great thread here from Ashley on two striking Black Brant hybrids that are on the Norfolk coast at the moment.

As Ash mentions, true Black Brants seems destined to become a BBRC rarity in the not too distant future.

This is well worth a read ๐Ÿ‘‡

Wherever I end up, it's always fun to find colour-rings, so a double-hit of blue-ringed Black-headed Gulls, stood on the rails, around Salford Quays today was very welcome. Almost certainly local birds but no matter, a CR is a CR ๐Ÿ™‚
Look forward to hearing more ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ˜… ~ that's brilliant! Still waiting for a garden JT but they're getting more & more frequent in the county, so we have๐Ÿคžthat maybe 2026 is the year to crack that one.

Just looked them up. We're normally scanning for micro moths on gorse flowers & having just looked at photos of the weevil, I'm pretty sure that I've seen them but not paid them enough attention. Definitely eyes open to them from now on. Thx for the heads up ๐Ÿ‘

More springtime splendour on the edge of the heath this morning ~ the delicate & delightful coconut scent of the gorse caught the gentle breeze a few times & made it feel ever so slightly summery...

Some of the small gathering of our local Wild Daffodils looking gorgeous in the early spring sunshine this morning. It's probably the only colony we know of locally, tho' there's likely more in the square that we haven't come across.

A Scarlet Tiger cat that was drawn to the actinic overnight. Not sure why they do this but these cats, more than any other, really do seem to be attracted to the light.

Another strong late February showing at CMO last night: three NFYs in our 29/12 (it's slow on the coast!). A really neat Twin-spotted Quaker, a double helping of Early Grey & a super-smart Acleris cristana (Tufted Tortrix).

As ever, it's a slooooow process on the coast for late winter mothing. Last night, wet for a good while, was still the best night of 2026 for CMO so far ~ 18/7! Some super Common Quakers, a couple of Hebrew Characters & the ubiquitous Chestnut.

We've got a bunch of "favourite views" around home & on an afternoon like this afternoon, it's hard not to think of the view across Arnold's Marsh off towards the village as being one the very best there is, anywhere...

The late afternoon light did cool things to the colours of this gorgeous bird, almost monochrome at times, the shades of brown eased to soft dove-greys. Exquisite!!!

A mild Tuesday, a bit of a breeze & warm afternoon sunshine for our 2nd go at the stunning drake Long-tailed Duck that's been in & out of Arnold's Marsh today. Could have watched this sensational bird all day ~ adult drakes on the marsh are rare!
