New in Monash Lens by me & @drstephaniewescott.bsky.social.
Looking at Married at First Sight, we consider how the language of βmasculine energy,β βalpha men,β & βnatural rolesβ constructs a world where gender hierarchy feels inevitable rather than ideological.

Very happy to confirm our article is now OPEN ACCES!

Not blocked. But I also don't understand the point being made. I am arguing for structural reform and worker dignity and better conditions in work that is socially necessary...
Thanks - the one i told you about 18-20 months ago is still in peer review!
Yes! i always feel odd about this...lie no permission has been sought but they are always there!
What keeps men out of frontline care work? - Our new paper in @bjsociology.bsky.social suggests problem is less masculine identity anxieties & more low pay, insecure hours, limited progression & poor public understanding of care work onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

In Nov, @steven-d-roberts.bsky.social made the case that we need to avoid feeding into notions that boys are βunder attackβ, and highlight why gender equality is good for all of us - something many boys and men are already putting into practice in a variety of ways: nowandmen.net/episode/stev...
What a privilege to talk to @steven-d-roberts.bsky.social for #NowandMen. We discussed how men's violence impacts on *everyone*, but also the seeds of hope found in young working-class masculinities, and Steven's experiences of both - in his own life and his research: nowandmen.net/episode/stev...
My new piece looks at why menβs struggles/ disconnection are real, but also part of a wider social malaise that we canβt be pinned on women. I reject Gallowayβs framing & argue the real crisis is rooted in broader social breakdown, not gender-essentialist narratives.

The ideology of oppression, segregation the GC framework doesn't make sense to me.
My Sunday morning reading;
"This paper contributes to the ongoing task of analysing the ideological connections between this strand of feminism and the far right."

This was such a lovely time and a great privilege. Thanks @thedailypanda.bsky.social and Sandy Ruxton for being such great and generous hosts
We got pretty emotional on the latest #NowandMen talking to Prof @steven-d-roberts.bsky.social about his amazing life & work, which illuminates both the sexist ideas being fed to young men, and the seeds of hope in how many are challenging rigid notions of masculinity. nowandmen.net/episode/stev...
1. A box a teenager checked on a form 20 years ago (that was accurate) isnβt newsworthy.
2. The source clearly had political motives and you hid that.
3. One the byline reporters on the βstoryβ is an avid follower of an open white supremacist.
4. Pictures of tweets? Really? You that lazy?
I wrote on this with @sociananthony.bsky.social last year as well. Here if youβre interested. parisinstitute.org/on-the-crisi...
βThe real work lies in moving past old scripts and moral panics, and towards a more thoughtful, inclusive approach to gender justice.β @steven-d-roberts.bsky.social

A Muslim son of immigrants, backed by and backing Black and Jewish leaders, rising in NYC politics isnβt just coalition-building, itβs the American promise realized. It terrifies bigots precisely because it works. Diverse power-sharing isnβt a threat, itβs the future. So New York. So necessary.
nice life news: I am rejoining the Faculty of Arts at Monash Uni, as Professor of Sociology from September.
Mixed emosh: the collaborations & friendships Iβve made in 3.5 years in Edu have been rewarding and transformative.
But, I am *really* excited to return 'home' to School of Social Sciences.

I had the extraordinary honour of being a keynote ar βMasculinities in Transitionβ international conference in Stockholm.
I borrow from Polanyi (!) to think about double movement that pulls young men towards reactionary AND caring masculinities, & suggest the margins can inspire a hopeful imaginary
