We found that the prevalence of lifetime use was 2.5x higher among people with eating disorders compared to the general adult population. About 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder reported misuse of a GLP-1 drug (e.g., tampering with syringes, accelerating doses, sharing with others). #EDAW
For National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, weβre sharing what weβre learning from our ongoing studies in the EAT Lab about preventing and treating eating disorders! Todayβs insight comes from our GLP-1 Study!
We asked our participants what areas of their lives are most impacted by having an eating disorder. These were some of the words that came up most frequently. #EDAW

Weβve learned that compulsive exercise could be driven by the nervous system trying to regulate itself, not just by psychology alone. This suggests that we may need to address the intersection between physiological and psychological factors to better prevent and treat eating disorders! #EDAW

Results from our pioneer study have shown that prior to treatment, anti-fat discrimination was the most salient discriminatory experience in a majority White sample. We also found that body dissatisfaction was associated with experiences of weight stigma and ableism. #EDAW

For NEDA Awareness Week, weβre sharing what weβre learning from our ongoing studies in the EAT Lab! Unsurprisingly, we found that greater social media use is positively associated with higher rates of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors in children in our Y.E.S. study!

β¨In the news! β¨ Big step forward for eating disorder care in Kentucky: a new bill would remove BMI from treatment standards so insurance canβt use one number to decide who is βsick enoughβ for care.

Yay for open science! Check out our recently published protocol paper for REDS Lab and @uofleatlab.bsky.social's R01, which is investigating predictors of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in anorexia spectrum disorders.
We offer practical steps for truly weight-inclusive, stigma-free care across clinical practice, research, and policy.
If we want equitable, effective treatment, we must dismantle the systems that created the harm.
New paper! We show how diet culture & weight stigma are baked into eating disorder treatmentβleading to missed diagnoses in higher-weight people, BMI-based denial of care, thin-centric programs, and clinicians unintentionally reinforcing fear of weight gain.
