So glad to see Kanako Nishi published in English, translated by Allison Markin Powell, at long last. Do read Sakura, itโs wonderful - I couldnโt put it down!

Now listening to The Bends by Radiohead. It's been a while actually, but a great album.
Japanese Nล Dramas in Penguin Classics, edited and translated by Royall Tyler. The cover shows a nล mask.
This is a really great way to get to know about nล drama, with 24 plays included, each with their own introductions, edited and translated (very well) by Royall Tyler. Nล has been really influential on other parts of Japanese literature, so definitely worth knowing about. Published in 1992.
The main image representing the widening divide between Europe (ๆฌง) and the United States (็ฑณ) caught my eye!

Sometimes I have really banal feelings of deja vu, like "I've experienced this before" when I'm hanging up clothes or doing the washing up.
This reminds me of "ใณใฃใใใใ!" I remember noting from watching English TV with J subs that it often appeared when English-speaking characters said "Oh god," or swore at a startling moment.
Beatles record with ใฒใจใใผใฃใกใฎใใใค (Nowhere Man) and ๆถใใๆ (What Goes On).
Random Japanese version of a song title: "Nowhere Man" by the Beatles is called "ใฒใจใใผใฃใกใฎใใใค."
Good to see Reform losing elections. Big win for the Greens.

This is my favourite thing I've seen via social media for a while.
This was fascinating.
Is Hanyu Yuzuru in the neighbourhood?
Happy to see that "In Our Time" is back, and catching up on the new episodes.

"Critics say the looming deadline and a lack of communication around the changes have left people scrambling to apply for new documents."

Walking a little way along the old Tokaido highway from Shinagawa. I expect the toilets used to be more basic.
Pizza Hut beer asks in romaji if you knew that hut means "koya" (hut) and not "boushi" (hat).
Man with glasses holding Japan and book.
I fed in some details to AI about me and it came up with this picture. I think it's pretty good.
The catโs out of the bag! I was so delighted the judges - all women I admire greatly - chose my translation. Thank you!

Such an ambiguous language, except sometimes.
Great to hear.
This is by Jeremy Brett in the Ancillary Review of Books, within a roundup of SFF books. It doesn't all fit in the genre, but there's plenty of fantasy in The Essential Akutagawa.

I found a nice review of The Essential Akutagawa today, so I'd like to share here. But first, I don't think I've previously shared this earlier review on the Life She Loves blog.

Meanwhile I was reading about rising gim prices this morning.

Dubai chocolate not so big in Japan, but I did try it out at Baskin Robbins.
I was just adding that one on!
Oh yes, and though it would most often be written in katakana as ใใชใใบใ, the more common way to write "hedgehog" in kanji is ้้ผ (you might say "needle" + "mouse").
Fwiw, it is a Kanji Kentei level 1 kanji.
Random kanji of the day: ่ (harinezumi) = "hedgehog"
Seen on the NHK show 0655, so I feel justified in sharing it. But should note this one is highly obscure, and unlikely to see it in Japanese apart from in the context of introducing obscure kanji.
First time I've seen taco ehomaki.
