As much as I'd like to see a total comparison of costs between the two, it's moot because as mentioned by others, the internet actually *worked*. Different technology, indeed!
I don’t recall the internet requiring so much power they had to reopen Three Mile Island for it.
The internet had a very real benefit from the start: you could communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world, instantly. Plus it had no absurd backend cost like LLM, just “use the phonelines and make more faster computers” which was already going on. There are no such benefits with LLM for most.
