But the mine overlaps with unique rainforest ecosystems and has been linked to deforestation. Some farmers report forced evictions, poor consultation and water pollution, including toxic hexavalent chromium.

PT Vale Indonesia’s Sorowako block is one of the country’s largest and longest-running nickel mines and supplies global battery supply chains. Nickel from the site is processed in Canada and Japan and reaches manufacturers including Panasonic, Ford and Tesla.
Nickel is a key ingredient in many batteries powering electric vehicles and energy storage systems - making responsible sourcing increasingly important.
New reporting by @mongabay.com highlights the environmental and social impacts linked to nickel mining in Indonesia. ⬇️
A toxic mine waste landslide in Indonesia killed one worker and halted operations – the latest warning from Indonesia’s nickel boom.
Nickel demand is soaring for EV batteries and other tech. But rapid expansion is putting communities at risk. earthworks.org/blog/another... @earthworks.bsky.social
It’s not only fashion brands that present themselves as socially responsible. Companies across a range of industries – including those dependent on mineral extraction – rely on audits & certification schemes to project an image of ethical production that can be misleading. See investigation below.

On Feb 19–20 (today and tomorrow), the merits of the case are being heard before the Paris Judicial Court.
For the first time, judges will rule on how France’s Duty of Vigilance law applies to climate change.
See more info at the link above.
Total is the world’s sixth largest oil & gas producer and continues major fossil fuel expansion.
The case follows six years of proceedings launched in 2020, when a coalition of local authorities took action alongside @notreaffaireatous.bsky.social, @asso-sherpa.bsky.social and @fne.asso.fr. They are asking the court to stop the company’s contribution to worsening climate change.
A decisive legal hearing is underway initiated under France’s Duty of Vigilance law, seeking to compel TotalEnergies to align its activities with the Paris Agreement.

Polluted waterways are a continuing legacy of the company’s mining activities. The EPA found that levels of arsenic and cyanide exceeded legal limits. Villagers say pollution has destroyed fishing livelihoods and caused serious health concerns. Explore the testimonies at the link above.
Local residents say mining has left communities with poisoned rivers, damaged homes and crops destroyed by elephants displaced by deforestation.
Bea Mountain exported more than $500m worth of gold in just 18 months. Meanwhile, local people report violent crackdowns during protests.
A new investigation explores disappearing forests in West Africa, starting with Liberia’s largest gold miner, Bea Mountain Mining Corporation. Gold from its mines has entered global supply chains linked to tech companies including Nvidia and Apple.

"When mining companies exit a country, the costs do not disappear; they are transferred to local communities. Mining towns lose their tax base, municipalities struggle to maintain essential infrastructure, and environmental damage goes unaddressed."
Jean-Claude Mputu from CNPAV (Le Congo n’est pas à vendre or "Congo is not for sale") said: “The interests of the Congolese people were not defended in this agreement, and one cannot build security while destroying the environment and violating the rights of local communities.”
The DRC holds more than 70% of global cobalt reserves and is emerging as a key strategic partner for the US. But lawyers and human rights defenders inside the country warn the deal prioritises geopolitics over human rights, arguing that the agreements have been negotiated in "total opacity".
Global competition for critical minerals is intensifying, with the US pushing to secure access to resources dominated by China – placing Africa, especially the DRC, at the centre of new deals. ⬇️ news.mongabay.com/2026/02/scru...

After the UK House of Lords debate on Kabwe (see our feed), we’re sharing a report we collaborated on with @actsa-uk.bsky.social (Oct 2025). The report examines impacts of lead contamination on women and children, with testimonies and new scientific research, and the class action in South Africa.
Yesterday, Lord Oates raised the lead pollution from colonial-era mining in Kabwe, Zambia, in the UK House of Lords with peers calling it a "horror" and a "shame"
Oates shared mothers' stories and said the UK as legal authority at the time has a moral responsiblity as well as miner Anglo American
Will the Kabwe class action go ahead in South Africa? We are awaiting the outcome of the appeal hearing that took place in November 2025. See our Q&A here: raid-uk.org/kabwes-battl...
The debate is happening in the context of the FCDO awarding Anglo American a new grant to support “inclusive growth and sustainable development”. Lord Hain asks if UK gov conducted any due diligence, or consulted relevant organisations, before pursuing this partnership. www.gov.uk/government/n...
