If any science journalists are looking for a relevant story and want to chat, the loss of early career scientists from biology and other STEM fields right now is really concerning. I have talked to so many young biologists trying to get into PhDs programs, get postdocs (me), or get a faculty postion
A soft pastel painting of a white rabbit with black ears, a black nose smudge, and gray paws on brown toned paper. The rabbit has a black highlight around it to solidify the edges.
Sometimes the good times make me want to create, sometimes the bad times make me want to create. I'm finding the intensity of the time is positively correlated to my output.
Here's Penelope

A soft pastel painting of a brown lop-eared rabbit. The rabbit is drawn in profile facing right. There are white highlights around the eye and muzzle. The eye is black with a small reflection. The painting is done on brown toned paper.
Making art again bc looking for adult career-related work is looking just as feasible moneymaking-wise. Fuck it. here's Squiggles.

Humans might show commitment with a ring, penguins offer rocks, and beetles gift a ball of dung. Wood-feeding cockroaches show commitment with a little cannibalism —and then fighting off everyone else.

RFK Jr on a mission to ruin the Kennedy name in Massachusetts! Good luck to him because I wouldn’t fuck with New England’s Dunkins access and expect to be ok on the other end lol
A red-breasted merganser drifts on a glassy pond surface, its reflection visible.
Happy Weird Duck Wednesday! 🦆 a red-breasted merganser photographed on icy South Mill Pond in Portsmouth, New Hampshire 🌿🪶

I’ve met so many folks who want to study bugs and learn how to find new species, there are absolutely more interested parties than there are jobs
I bought the cheapest Bluetooth compatible cassette nugget to play this but I'm just so glad these tapes still work! I don't expect the player I have to withstand the test of time so if I end up getting disposable income any time soon I might invest in one of those nice fiio players...
A fucking brilliant writer whose brain was eaten alive by 9/11, which qualifies as a tragedy.
A macro photo of a slender, tiny wasp atop a batch of katydid eggs. The eggs, which look like brown lima beans, are tiled along a brown grass stem. Four have roundish holes chewed through their sides, where parasitoid wasps (like the one perched on top of them) chewed their way out. The wasp is metallic-copper colored with a yellow abdomen band and large eyes.
A macro photo of a group of katydid eggs, which look like brown lima beans, tiled along a brown grass stem against a pale green background. In the upper right, a tiny wasp's face is peeking out of an escape hole it is chewing from the inside of a katydid egg it has parasitized. A second egg, lower left, has a hole in it where a wasp has already hatched and flown off.
A macro photo of a tiny, green, newly-hatched katydid nymph perched atop a fingertip, against a green and blue-green background. The fingertip and katydid are lower right, and one of the katydid's extremely long antennae stretches all the way up to the upper left corner of the frame.
From a few years ago: katydid eggs mostly parasitized by tiny wasps. When a katydid hatches, the egg opens like a clam shell; but as you can see (pic 2), if there's a parasitoid wasp inside, they chew their way out. Btw, the baby katydid on my fingertip hatched from the same egg clutch. #BugSky 🐙🌿
Never heard of this law before right this second but holy fuck if it does not 100% check out
Really trying not to care about the new pokemon gen announcement bc the pokemon company and nintendo have earned precisely 0 goodwill from their last few releases vis-a-vis optimization, polish, and anti-consumer bs.
The starters are cute though. I like eyebrow bird
y'all mind if a magnapinna squid is low poly ?
I've been doing some serious souls searching this past month regarding what I want to continue studying, and I think that studying anthropogenic effects on aquatic environments, and how we manage water resources is only gonna be more prescient as time goes on.
Do any followers have any insight on the prospects of transitioning from aquatic biology -> environmental engineering/water resources management for postgraduate study? I would imagine the leap wouldn't be unprecedented, no?
Also the people talking about pronouns too much are transphobes
Everyone else is just using them
As someone commented, this is the principal equivalent of jury nullification.
A photo of a black cat nestled between a keyboard and desktop tower in front of a pc monitor. The cat is flopped around a person's arm. Charging cables can be seen towards the back of the desk everything is resting on.

A black box of cassette tapes labelled the lord of the rings j.r.r. tolkien from 1981 with a painting of the characters centered on the cover.
Awesome antique store pull. Now I just gotta get that old cassette radio out of the garage and working to see if these are any good.
