Kay on the Prairie

@kayontheprairie

Just snapping photos as I tromp around. Special interests: native plants, invertebrates, birds. NW Illinois. New to conservation, newer to photography. All photos are my own unless reposts.

Can you guess which lake this is in the Boundary Waters? Mining runoff could flow directly into the BWCA, threatening water, fish, wildlife, and lakes. These are your public landsβ€”act now: www.friends-bwca.org/take-action-no-renewal-of-bwca-mineral-leases/
Answer: Cummings Lake

Another great dragonfly monitoring workshop this past weekend with the amazing @phrelanzer.bsky.social! We also got a fascinating lecture on the Rubyspot genus Hetaerina by @cnanderson.bsky.social, which was a real treat. I can't wait to get out on the prairie

A male bumblebee covered in pollen clings to the tip of a large deep pink flower bud of Hibiscus moscheutos with his wings standing out. He has scattered pollen all down the side of the bud, which is tightly furled, and has a row of long, narrow pointed sepals coming from the stem, surrounding the bottom like a cage. The background is an old wooden fence. June 2025, Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
