To date, and with your help, weβve collected over 58,200 cell phones, 68,961 kg of e-waste, and raised over $38,600 for Great Ape Conservation programs.
In 2025, your Toronto Zoo donated $5,000 to our conservation partners at Ape Action Africa and $2,500 to Pan African Sanctuary Alliance.
We ensure 100% landfill-free recycling, allowing materials like coltan to be reused while protecting wildlife habitats.

Each year, millions of cell phones end up in landfills, adding up to approximately 65,000 tonnes of waste! Instead, donate your old phones to our Phone Apes program by dropping them off during your next visit, during special collection weekends at the front entrance or by mailing them to the Zoo.
Many of the materials used to make cell phones, like coltan, are mined from the forests of the Congo, home to the critically endangered Western lowland gorillas. By recycling your old devices, you help reduce the demand to mine the habitats that they call home.
Your smartphone comes at a high cost to wildlife, but our Phone Apes program can help change that π¦
Consider donating your old devices to your Toronto Zoo's Phone Apes program π±
Be sure to look for Margaret and Marley in their Tundra Trek habitat alongside the rest of the caribou during your next visit. π¦
Weβre grateful to our partners at Riverview Park and Zoo for their collaboration in ensuring the well-being of the caribou in our collective care, and weβre proud to continue working together to advance caribou conservation.
This move provides increased social opportunities for both the Peterborough and Toronto herds: caribou are highly social animals that thrive in larger groups. It is also a meaningful reunion, as all six caribou were originally part of the same herd!
Weβre excited to share news that your Toronto Zoo recently welcomed two new caribou from Riverview Park & Zoo in Peterborough π¦
Margaret and Marley are both 8-year-old females, and they have quickly integrated with our resident group of four female caribou.
