Can promise you both that the lathe sold out some years ago 😢
“I waited…” especially is an absolute pearl, and I am now incandescent on yr behalf that Clare & Matt didn’t sign you up!

Picture of MC Duke & DJ Leader One’s “Organised Rhyme” album (this is the Original Dope CD re-issue from about 15 years ago). The sleeve stars Duke as Lord of the manor, posing in front of a Rolls-Royce and a mansion.
CD booklet centrefold from MC Duke’s “Organised Rhyme” re-issue on Original Dope, plus CD. He looks *extremely* dapper.
Don’t think anyone has suggested MC Duke and DJ Leader One for #5DebutAlbums8589 - why not?
First heard MC Duke via his Peel Session back in ’87 (remember JP explaining the complications around Duke having been in prison at the time).
“I’m Riffing” is the obvious must-hear.
Picture of four almost unfeasibly strong debut albums released on Earache Records in the late 1980s, all in CD form: Terrorizer “World Downfall”. Start with: “Fear of Napalm” Napalm Death “Scum”. Start with: the title track (although “You Suffer” is the most famous?) Unseen Terror “Human Error”. Our fave: “Ignorant Scene”. Although their standout tunes – both on their fine Peel Session 12” - may be “Voice Your Opinion” and “Strong Enough To Change”. The latter, marvellously, was on the “21 Years Of Alternative Radio 1” LP alongside Hendrix, Procol Harum, the Mary Chain etc. Morbid Angel “Altars of Madness”. Start with: “Maze of Torment”.
More Earache fare for #5DebutAlbums8589
The Terrorizer, Napalm and Morbid Angel CDs should need no introduction (and have stood the test of time).
So a special shout out, then, for Unseen Terror’s fuzz-draped ditties about kindness, world obliteration and Garfield the cat.
A steal even at £14.99!
Genuinely upset with myself but I guess I now own “ceum” by the Orchids, a limited edition of one…
It means a lot! Still glad I discovered the album. Thank you 💛
This is a heartwarmingly honest record.
And not the only recent release worth picking up on this label!
If only. A mix of “bought with pocket money” and later trips to the Record & Tape Exchange!
Yes. Should I ever win the lottery, I promise I’ll set up quite the reissue label!
Yup. With bands I usually think “if you can’t be good, be different” but they really managed to be both.
Opens with what’s probably one of my favourite 80s songs! That and “Harmony of Dogs”.
An Act of God. So sorry! Now that would have really hit my Sarah purchases
I still feel awful about it, and try to blame climate change for my abysmal vinyl stewardship…
Neil, I actually missed them at the time but it was a revelation!
I still think they could both have been even better though…
Picture of two sadly blemished classic Sarah Records 10” LPs from the late 1980s: “Snowball” by the Field Mice and “Lyceum” by the Orchids. Both, it goes without saying, are absolute keepers. Let’s not get into an argument about whether they are actually ‘mini-LPs’.
Water-damaged Sarah classics for #5DebutAlbums8589
We had a roof leak a few years ago, and it got to the 10”s first… ☹
Four more, slightly more random, debut LPs from the second half of the 1980s: Primal Scream “Sonic Flower Groove” (Elevation) – luckily we now have “Reverberation” to sate our early Primals need, but tbf “Gentle Tuesday” is still a classic Jactars “Pull The Plug” (Pink Moon) – Mysterious/maudlin fare from Peel favourites at the time, now unloved? The Charlottes “Lovehappy” (Subway) – fine band, turned out to be ahead of their time viz. the later shoegaze/noise revoluation Thrilled Skinny “They Said We Wouldn’t But We Did!” (Hunchback) – yes one of the best bands ever but the production on this does, as they later acknowledged, let it down…

Four more fine debut LPs from that creatively fertile second half of the 1980s: Noseflutes “Five Young Men Ignite Hardboard Stump” (Reflex) – they suffered recognition-wise by not being on C86, I suspect, but this is amazing. “Perfect Cockney Hard On” could be the best song of its ilk of the era The Wedding Present “George Best” (Reception Records) – first copies came with either a carrier bag, or a white vinyl 7” of “My Favourite Dress” iirc. Obviously we loved this LP and slavishly taught ourselves several of the songs from it. McCarthy “I Am A Wallet” (September) – like “George Best”, another after-school purchase! Bogshed “Step On it” (Shelfish) – acquired much later, via the Record & Tape Exchange…

Four fine debut LPs from the fecund second half of the 1980s: The June Brides “There Are 8 Million Stories…” (The Pink Label). Purchased from Basildon Our Price back in the day Korova Milkbar “Talking’s Boring” (Subway) – NB a couple of brilliant songs here, they are wrongly overlooked The Bodines “Played” (Magnet) Shop Assistants “Shop Assistants” (Blue Guitar/Chrysalis)

Picture of 3 Wize Men's "GB Boyz" CD album, and "Urban Hell" 12" - both released on Rhythm King, via Mute.
A UK hip-hop classic for #5DebutAlbums8589 - "G.B. Boyz" by 3 Wize Men, on Rhythm King Records.
Featured the "Urban Hell" single pictured here as well as "Refresh Yourself", which starred on Indie Top 20 Volume II back in the day... think they also appeared on the NME's Sgt Pepper covers LP.
Picture of Intense Degree's "War In My Head" LP on Earache Records.
Not the only Earache Records contender for #5DebutAlbums8589 but this is wide-eyed belligerent skatecore, rather than grindcore or nascent death metal.
The promo label nails it, really: "25 SONG ALBUM OF MANIC, UNRELENTING HARDCORE, PLAYED AT FEROCIOUS SPEED" 😁
Pictures of four 12" singles from EPMD, all songs which appeared on their "Strictly Business" debut: "It's My Thing" (attributed to Epee MD), "You Gots To Chill", "Strictly Business" and "I'm Housin'" (which seems to have an X and Y side rather than an A and B).
That is a heavyweight contender!
I believe these were the singles from it - the first credited to "EPEE MD". All of these individual classics, too
Thank you. Not sure Step On It is my favourite Bogshed platter, but they’re all great & I have a few weeks to re-listen.
Insanely hard to pick 5 from that era!
I might be 😉
Does “Let Them Eat Bogshed” count? Or is “Step On It” the 1st album proper?
Page on Some Velvet Sidewalk from Incite! #14. "Yeah sure you know about modern lovers and modern hate. Maybe you even think you know about emotion, about skinny folks just singing their guts out and not always getting it quite right. You still gotta listen up, pal. Just do it and ask questions later."
Review of Some Velvet Sidewalk's "Earthbound" / "Land" single on K Records, from Incite! #16, which laments them apparently having split up. "noisily provides still more reasons to believe in the International Revolution astir in Olympia and its environs."
Big moment for us as it introduced me to Some Velvet Sidewalk - and the other artists! The cuttings here are from Incite! #14 and #16...
(I asked Tim if he could remember the Galaxie 500 songs in question and he couldn't, but thought maybe the swoonsome "Tugboat" as they'd recorded that early on)
this was a big moment for Some Velvet Sidewalk - to be included with these other artists. No Galaxie 500 - but the X-tal songs are very cool - !
Picture of the Sewing Room's 1996 "Drug Free" CD EP (a six tracker). I may have spent 30 years thinking this was a one-off, but it turns out they also did two albums.
Ah, here it is. Very good too - shades of Hey Paulette! with a darker palette and a slower pace.
Yes, it's great when serendipity strikes 😺
Have a great EP by them after hearing Peel play it, but never clocked the connection with the bands you mention!
Though makes sense as he played them too.
& didn't dream when typing this that I might get to see some of these songs performed again! @wbgooderham.bsky.social
Completely! Though was a bit nervous about making the stylus jump when I wandered past the mixing desk…
This - had a splendid eventide in E17 watching Down For You Is Up & E’Spaniel
Thanks to all who have supported 'Different Beliefs' with a listen or a download, much appreciated. 'Resurrection Country' is one of the most played tunes on the mini-album, must admit I have a soft spot for it myself... thisisslowcountry.bandcamp.com/track/resurr...
