...also spectrogram somehow becomes 'Spektrum' ...some really weird quirks when we consider that 'normal' translation does not make these mistakes...

...first time using an LLM to do translations. And whew am I glad I understand German. So many subtle hallucinations I would never have realised otherwise. Making up words ('Echolokationsfledermaus') & classic hallucination ('a bioinspired flight capable system'..instead of 'bioinspired system').

AI World Clocks The current time as rendered by 9 different AI models. By Brian Moore.

Okay, let's get the AI discussion entirely out of the hype-and-theory realm. For the "I'll just vibe code and trust the LLM folks," here's an interesting page showing results from asking several LLMs to perform a simple coding task (creating an HTML/CSS clock): [clocks.brianmoore.com/].

This looks v cool, and GA is something I always wanted to try out at some point. Any chance this is part of a lecture that's online somewhere? - remember you'd also put up a lecture where the Pareto front features a whole back.

Realised today that one of the packages I wrote during my postdoc (beamshapes, see QR code) has been used and cited to do some cool science.

I'm feeling unusually happy about this, somehow even more than a paper citation.

Shout-out to the @dfg.de + @cbehav.bsky.social for funding this work.

..all of this without the usual process of a colleague going through the package website, trying to see if it's relevant, looking at described examples, gauging code and documentation quality etc.

This is scarily true - professional + collegial attention- & esp. true for scientific software. I'm imagining a niche field - where there are anyway only 1-2 OSS package/s out there. Even lesser incentives to develop, test, document, if it'll all be spat out as code snippets 1/2

I Set A Trap To Catch My Students Cheating With AI. The Results Were Shocking. "Students are not just undermining their ability to learn, but to someday lead."

β€œHistory shows us that the right to literacy came at a heavy cost…those oppressed recognized that literacy is liberation. To my students & to anyone who might listen, I say: Don’t surrender to AI your ability to read, write & think when others once risked their lives & died for the freedom to do so”

Seeing advertisements by OpenAI I'm Bengaluru saying 'I want to give a public speech...teach me how'...with ChatGPT written in blazing letters below. Wow.

what exactly does the company think an LLM can do...? #AIhype

Have you ever seen a worm tower? YouTube video by Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior

Move over, starling murmurations. There’s a slimier, squirmier collective behavior in town. It's a living, twisting tower of worms.

Everybody, meet the wormuration πŸͺ±πŸͺ±

Reading a paper that uses mics to record a cool animal sound, and then the sentence along the lines of .... 'gain was regulated continuously to improve signal-to-noise' ratio....sigh.

If you already have a bad SNR, amping up the gain will only make everything 'bigger', but SNR doesn't change!
