Trump doesn't have sympathy for Putin. He has obligations. He feels no sympathy, empathy, or anything of that nature. He's a malignant, narcissistic sociopath, that's pretty much by definition. The deaths of service members barely even register to him except as annoyances that make him look bad.
Remember, this is the same paper whose Moscow correspondent Walter Duranty undeservedly won a Pulitzer for his sanitized reporting of Stalin's plans in Ukraine (a genocidal famine, the Holodomor).
