Maybe cynical, but I think it ultimately boils down to the rich being happy to take fascism over any prospect of paying more tax / having their power curbed, so we get the choice of ‘sensible’ centrist decline or mad far right chaos. The latter is low risk if you’re rich and white.

I think it’s more that the centrists across the world view meaningful change as more risky, than their approach letting the far right in. See Biden, Macron, post Brexit UK etc etc
