there is going to be a huge influx of UCLA students seeking cheaper housing in ktown when D line extension fully opens
ok tbf she does point in the article that NCs suck ass
anyway, abolish NCs. some of the worst bullies i've ever interacted with anywhere. people who should never be involved in planning. i think korean business reps won the next election and all these people were replaced but they still only sign off on apts and liquor licenses and not much else
the project was on WILSHIRE. it's still parking lot. tried to block a plaza teardown on 8th and hobart to protect a tree that has destroyed sidewalk. same people also tried to block development on literal top of wilshire/normandie station.
in my second meeting, wong + a few other members screamed me down for advocating for a project that would replace an empty parking lot on wilshire. like, "developers are colonizing the neighborhood" level meltdown on a zoom call with 11 participants. completely unserious left NIMBYism
someone on bsky (or maybe it was on twitter) posted that koreatown has year over year rent decreases in last 10 years (around 3%) and basically no other neighborhood other than downtown has seen the same reduction in rent -- not sure if i have the bookmark anymore
the city froze our NC funding because of the lack of quorum. we bmoved agenda items from month to month. there was a stronger DSA/left presence at one point (2020) but the loudest voices (again, including wong) would bully everyone else out of meetings for advocating for *LITERALLY* any change
being elected by only 72 votes -- that is really a marker of how badly broken the NC system is in LA (and what a waste of time/money/resources it is for everyone). i was elected with 7 votes in the first meeting i attended. the NC could never act because we couldn't make quorum (9 votes)
i briefly served on the koreatown/WC neighborhood council at the same time as kristina wong, who is quoted here, and she was part of the loud, leftist NIMBY majority at the time that tried to stop literally every development in the neighborhood
DON'T HESITATE Mary Oliver If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that's often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

who is this?
yeah i really think bass is totally cooked rn now and i don't even get why she wants a second term
she has big org endorsements (LACFL, LAPPL, ALF CIO) but what does that matter anymore to voters concerned about housing costs or quality of life issues
the charter reform commission recs are pretty good and include all of this stuff. will be aggravating to see CC squirm and say the 9-2 vote from commission isn't the will of the people or whatever
hugo + eunisses have also tried to repeatedly water down reform efforts! granted, i've seen *slightly* better statements from them recently (calls to increase # of seats) but we'll see how they vote
politico.com/news/2024/05/15/why-scandal-plagued-los-angeles-is-resisting-ethics-reforms-00158067
i donate monthly to AHLA but i will admit they have made some terrible endorsements in the last few elections. to be fair, i think this has caused some reevaluation of endorsement process on their end (from what i've seen)...also we must acknowledge that LA pols are just so turncoat once in office
and for the record, in that vote, DSA member hugo voted against raman's amendments to expand to SFH because "we didn't get enough constituent input" (lol, just lol)
laist.com/news/housing-homelessness/los-angeles-rezoning-housing-element-chip-ordinance-single-family-zones-city-council-vote
"Raman said that opening these neighborhoods up to development would undo some of the city's historic housing discrimination policies."
she has repeatedly stuck her head out on this
larchmontbuzz.com/larchmont-village-news/la-city-council-approves-housing-plan-preserving-single-family-neighborhoods/
"Raman introduced amendments that would have permitted MFH developments in all single-family neighborhoods throughout the city."
100% to everything @jonathaneby.bsky.social shared here, these are the big differences between nithya and rae's campaign to me
by "primary for a seat guaranteed to be dem" i meant mayor, not CC seat. i get the gripes about nithya's seat going to some traci park / john lee maniac! i live in LA and hate the city council. but i also think nithya would do the work to help someone campaign for her seat if it was vacated...?
aw thanks @pettyyeti.bsky.social, yes i saw her video and have kept an eye on the site even though we didn't message directly. i will say rae's site is better than nithya's, but actual policy details would be helpful (like, what SB79 implementation option would rae's campaign prefer, etc)
yeah, i get your criticisms but also...it's a primary for a seat that is *guaranteed* to go to a democrat. having multiple left-leaning candidates will help shape the narrative and issues of the race. bass will probably not win a majority outright with 2 left leaning challenges in the race
rae was not endorsed by DSA either so not sure why this matters?
eliza: how do you do? please tell me your problem. dan: i don't have a first sentence for this article. eliza: i am not sure i understand you fully. dan: i don't know how to start the article. eliza: don't you really know how to start the article? dan: no, i don't. eliza: aren't you saying "no" just to be negative? dan: i'm saying no because i can't think of an opening sentence. eliza: is it because you can't think of an opening sentence that you came to me? dan: yes. eliza: you seem quite positive.
dan: can you help me start off the article? eliza: you believe i can help you start off the article, don't you? dan: i hope so. eliza: why do you need to tell me you hope so? dan: because i do. eliza: is that the real reason? dan: no. eliza: you are being a bit negative. dan: yes, i am being negative. eliza: are you sure? dan: no, i'm not sure. eliza: how long have you been not sure? dan: the hell with it. i'll start the article by myself. eliza: can you elaborate on that?
when m.i.t. psychologist joseph weizenbaum created the program in 1966, he just wanted to show how computers could be used to converse in english. weizenbaum was shocked to hear that the program was being praised by professional psychologists as a breakthrough in the mental health field. "they told me that with eliza we could treat hundreds of patients an hour at state hospitals," he said in jack rochester's book, the naked computer (1983).
