That’s a £30 billion black hole in our economy, according to the IFS. And a ‘car crash’ for our care industry & the NHS. Just for starters. On the plus side, Bromsgrove currently has hundreds of union flags flying from lampposts.

dear media, Jim Ratcliffe’s far-right language does not mean it’s a green light for a phone-in asking ‘is he right?’ it’s the moment to call out his use of far-right language

My three current lines of enquiry. Apparently discrete obsessions, I am discovering daily that the extent of overlap and interweaving between them, their development, and their enjoyment is significant. Within the limits of these worlds, at least, all is wonderful...
Thank you Tom
Hi Tom, am I too late? I would love one if not!
I liked the taste of beer, its live, white lather, its brass-bright depths, the sudden world through the wet-brown walls of the glass, the tilted rush to the lips & the slow swallowing down to the lapping belly, the salt on the tongue, the foam at the corners.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
For Jim Moir/Vic Reeves' birthday, a reminder it's thirty years this year since this advert.
A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.
A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.
The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...
We are Christopher Isherwood, watching the violent racist authoritarian lawless scenes in the Berlin street below from our apartment window above.
Sunburst Finish by Be-Bop Deluxe album reverse cover. Four members of the band standing inside a huge glass on a table top, with a flaming guitar lying on the left hand side.
'A very British amalgam of mannered glam a la Cockney Rebel, post-Tommy classic rock, the proto post punk of Eno’s Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy and the avant-prog of King Crimson’s Red'

#BREAKING Lionel Richie has given me one of his Grammys. Mr. Richie told reporters he had made the presentation “as a recognition for Patrick’s unique commitment to dancing on the ceiling.” I in turn called it a “a wonderful gesture”
"Migrants who came to the UK on skilled work visas in 2022-23 will make a net contribution of £47bn to the public finances over their lifetime, according to new estimates from the government’s Migration Advisory Committee."
Not surprising, but some observations (1/n)

Rarely is an artist the soundtrack to a whole life. Jimmy Cliff was one of those rare individuals. RIP. www.theguardian.com/music/2025/n...
Aw fuck. I'd been hoping to go and see Soft Cell when they toured their next album. Really sad news. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
We are so sad to hear that Dave Ball, the keyboard genius of Soft Cell, has died. He was an electronic pop pioneer and with Marc Almond made a unique catalogue of songs, completely original in sound and content. Our love and condolences go to Marc and all those close to Dave. Neil and Chris xx
Danny Thompson RIP
He's played with The Pentangle, Kate Bush, Everything But The Girl, ABC, Nick Drake, Talk Talk, Rod Stewart, John Martyn, David Sylvian, T.Rex, teh Thunderbirds theme, Peter Gabriel oh god all sorts
I was going to make some smart point.
But the arsehole isn't worth it.
He's not even worthy of casual contempt.
‘He made white British readers recognise Jamaican patois. Most readers need to articulate the poems in order to understand their meaning: glancing at the page isn’t enough.’

‘The conditions in the hotels are very bad: most residents share rooms with complete strangers, have no laundry or cooking facilities, no choice about when or what they eat, with any visits strictly policed by security.’

Labour, Tories and Reform are talking about trying to shrink the UK’s working age population by curtailing immigration. Here’s an excellent summary of why this approach is catastrophic even solely on economic grounds. www.bearlypolitics.co.uk/p/nans-not-b...
