Ancient sculpture of the Egyptian God Anubis where it kind looks like he's doing a "settle down, we're all friends here" gesture.
ANUBIS: whoa, whoa, easy there. let's not make any hasty decisions. or do anything we might regret. my name is anubis, what's yours? imhotep. nice to meet you imhotep. now we're talking to each other. we're friends. so how about you put down the gun, let the girl go, and i'll put away my feather.

a meme β the top says βMy dog just got a haircut and now he looks like he gave up drinking and got his life togetherβ and underneath are 2 photos of a dog (a schnauzer i think?). on the left, the βbefore,β heβs scruffy and in need of a haircut and a bath. and on the right, the βafter,β heβs clean and clipped and wearing a jaunty red bow tie and looking very dapper indeed.
i donβt know if itβs the jaunty bow tie or what but i cannot stop laughing at this

I donβt have the heart to use the anti-squirrel lights and alarm that are built into our birdfeeder. They are too cute.

(what also helped me is playing BG3 before i even played tabletop DnD, haha)
what also massively helps is the understanding in your group that you're all new, all learning, and just there to have fun. that takes a lot of the pressure off
the rules are straightforward in most cases, and remember that the rules are only there to help facilitate a shared story; story comes first. just know when it makes the most sense to ask players to roll their d20. and in combat, it's usually just roll to hit, then roll for damage per weapon stats!
also note, i consider myself a total rookie at this, but IT EXCITES ME. i'm hosting another one shot in Cy Borg this weekend so it's on my mind! :D
it's worthwhile to own, but there are a LOT of great resources on youtube for DMs, e.g.:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuxP... and
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPXT...
also, DnD starter packs with premade one-shots do a good job of easing not just players but also DMs into the world and the rules too

PREPARING A SESSION The more you prepare before your game, the more smoothly the game will go-to a certain point. To avoid being either under- or overprepared, use the one-hour guideline below and prioritize what to prepare depending on the time you have available. THE ONE-HOUR GUIDELINE A D&D game session usually starts with some out-of-game chatter as everyone settles down to play. Once the session gets underway, most groups can accomplish at least three things during one hour of play, where each "thing" might be any of the following: β’ Explore a location such as a chamber in a castle or a cave β’ Converse with an intelligent creature β’ Reach consensus on a divisive issue β’ Solve a tricky riddle or puzzle β’ Survive a deadly trap β’ Fight a low-difficulty combat encounter A more difficult combat encounter might count as two or three things, and a tense negotiation can use most or all of an hour of play on its own. PREPARATION TIME The following guidelines can help you prepare for a session of play using a published adventure. ONE-HOUR PREPARATION If you spend one hour each week preparing for your game, follow these steps: Step 1. Focus on the story of the adventure. Read or reread the adventure's introduction and background information. Create a bulleted list of key plot points to make sure a coherent story unfolds. Step 2. Identify the encounters you want to run, then figure out how likely it is each encounter will get played, categorizing each one as "definite," "possible," or "unlikely." Step 3. Gather any maps you'll need for the definite and possible encounters, then focus the remainder of your prep time on the definite encounters, as outlined below. For combat encounters, review the monsters' tactics and stat blocks. Note any special rules that apply to the setting of the encounter. For social interaction encounters, make notes about the nonplayer characters (NPCs) in the en-counter-their personalities, goals, and tactics. For exploration encounters, record anyβ¦
I just started DMβing in the past year! Regular group of pals who constantly try to derail me in hilarious ways. I think main thing is prepare but donβt over prepare, listen to players (let them lead the story; βstealβ ideas from their discussions), and you donβt need to memorize every rule. Also:

CHAPTER ONE WELCOME TO THE ELECTRIC STATE What we're doing isn't civilized, I know that. But I know it must have happened to you too. Like me, you must have woken up one day and suddenly realized the inevitable: we no longer live in civilized times.
