πŸ“Wanssum, Dutch Limburg

On Saturday I was cycling through Dutch Limburg when I came across this memorial at Wanssum, the lonely Tommies guarding the river.

The Imperial War Museums archive holds several photos from this area.

The full proclamation and the story behind it, is in the video on YouTube.

I might have delivered it with a bit more drama…
but the kids were already asleep πŸ˜‰

4 March 1815.

Napoleon is marching north through the mountains.

He knows he cannot defeat the army.
He has to win it.

β€œVictory shall march at a charging step.
The eagle with the national colours shall fly from steeple to steeple till it reaches the towers of Notre Dameβ€πŸ§΅

Napoleon lands in France on 1 March 1815 and sets Europe in motion one last time.
The β€œHundred Days” start. Even if it weren’t actually 100 at all.

Clip from the 1970 movie Waterloo, in case you missed all the on-screen text.

Wintry greetings from the battlefield. Quiet fields, long shadows and the perfect day to walk the ground of 1815. #NapoleonicWars β„οΈπŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ

Battlefield Hikes Walking historical campaigns, one step at a time.

I think the best picture I took while being an active reenactor. Somewhere on the Waterloo battlefield late 00’s.

There is no better way to appreciate the commitment of the men who took part in the campaign than to walk the ground.
So I invite you to join me on 18 June.

151 days to go. Check your agenda.

Interested? DM me.

I’ll be correcting some of the mistakes I made last year and finally visiting the Ligny Museum.

And for the final day, 18 June, I’m reaching out to anyone who wants to tag along.

Belated Happy New Year!

In 2025, I dove deep into my passion for history and 2026 will be no different.

This year, I’m planning two (!) multi-day hikes, staying firmly in the Napoleonic era.
The first will, of course, be the Waterloo Campaign and you can take part.

@rgpoulussen.bsky.social I am looking for clips and photos of Antwerp and operations north of it during early October. I have found some in Canadian archives but I’m sure you know where I would also could look?

You made a good pick. If I ever get around to assembling a force they would be on the top of my list! Hopefully they will help you to victory πŸ˜ƒ

Steinmetz, Reiche, von Gilhausen! Is there any other formation more involved in the campaign?
