If you want to read one paper to understand wildfire insurance markets in CA, itβs this one.
It is an absolute fantastic read and shows exactly why some insurers pulled out of the market.

Meta is dropping fact-checking to avoid anti-conservative bias- but is there actually evidence of bias?
We this test empirically & find that conservatives
* ARE suspended more
* BUT share more misinfo
So suspension isn't necessarily evidence of bias www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Unfortunately, academic inflation and toxic productivity culture has all but done away with this. The effects of this on science advancement will be seen for generations. Slowing down and thinking deeply is essential to solve complex problems and itβs undervalued at every level
Love that thereβs a section called βdown the rabbit holeββfits the whole article imho π²

WRONG: We show brief convos w GPT4 reduce conspiracy beliefs by ~20%!

Very nice example of how useful comparison (or trend calculation) usually needs something more than coefficients. They have a nice page on the general idea that is hidden down in the thread: ourworldindata.org/age-standard...
My small part in trying to get people to understand why it seems like running government like a business is a good idea, when in fact it's a terrible one (1/4):

Can *you* tell your biases from your heuristics? They are related, but not the same: https://buff.ly/3Zpipu2
We tested a hypothesis that misinformation exploits outrage to spread online, examining generalizability across multiple platforms, time periods, and classifications of misinformation. Outrage is highly engaging and need not be accurate to achieve its communicative goals, making it an attractive signal to embed in misinformation. In eight studies that used US data from Facebook (1,063,298 links) and Twitter (44,529 tweets, 24,007 users) and two behavioral experiments (1475 participants), we show that (i) misinformation sources evoke more outrage than do trustworthy sources; (ii) outrage facilitates the sharing of misinformation at least as strongly as sharing of trustworthy news; and (iii) users are more willing to share outrage-evoking misinformation without reading it first. Consequently, outrage-evoking misinformation may be difficult to mitigate with interventions that assume users want to share accurate information.
Now out in @science.org: misinformation exploits outrage to spread online. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The strain on scientific publishing: we set out to characterise the remarkable growth of the scientific literature in the last few years, in spite of declining growth in total scientists. What is going on?

Screenshot of OSTP website from Obamaβs first administration with Science Advisor, John Holdren walking beside the president, vs. May of 2017, when it was stripped of any office detail. Trump whittled the office from 135 to 45 people, and went without a science advisor for the first two years of his first term.
Full (sad) circle moment. As an intern, I ran the Office of Science & Tech Policyβs Twitter acct in 2010. Just hit me that 1. it was the last time I had Twitter & 2. Trump then gutted the OSTP & went w/o a science advisor for first 2 years of his last term. Buckle up & thankful for discourse here π
