I think motivation in video games should be studied more. Given Hollow Knight's giant success, it clearly gave a certain type of player more than enough motivation.
With my personality, it came up empty.

Games like Banjo Tooie have metroidvania progression, and the devs of Alien Isolation thought of the game as a metroidvania internally....
I guess "ability gating" is the thing many are really talking about when they say "metroidvania"
For example, some say Metroid Prime is not a metroidvania because it's 3D first person, even though the goal of the devs was to recreate Super Metroid in 3D first person.
Castlevania SotN was actually inspired by Zelda, not metroid, yet Zelda is not often considered a metroidvania 😵
Yeah, I think the term "metroidvania" is somewhat nebulous. People seem to have different definitions for it. Some get quite particular about it.
I think I prefer action-adventure or search action (the japanese name) just to be safe.

I had to chance to pitch a Bubsy game to Atari a few years ago. We wanted to do a hi-res pixel art game, basically Bubsy's Sonic Mania. Did not expect a 3D platformer! Very cool, will check it out.
When GameMaker adds new features, it would be wise to consult game designers and creative-first developers.
Only asking engineers for new code features alone will just recreate some other OOP language inside of GML, instead of letting GML be what GML is.
