Today we're sharing this delightful detail of a Saintonge polychrome jug, which was found at a medieval tenement site in #Winchelsea, E Sussex.

This type of ceramic was imported from SW France during the late 13th-early 14th centuries & is associated with wine trading.

An intricate octopus cut from a single piece of paper

Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as “cut picture”), the art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and then contrasting it against a black background to reveal the design.

This exquisite photograph features a highly ornamental kokeshi doll representing an oiran, or high-ranking courtesan, of the historic Edo period. The doll is carved with a serene, smiling face and a sophisticated hairstyle adorned with a complex array of traditional hairpins (kanzashi), including golden combs, red floral ornaments, and a whimsical white die and red ball. Her multi-layered kimono is a masterpiece of miniature detail, featuring a purple outer robe over a red collar with a geometric hemp-leaf (asanoha) pattern. The central panel of the garment depicts a colorful, gold-leafed landscape scene with a flowing river and floral motifs. The dark, soft-focus background emphasizes the doll's intricate craftsmanship and vibrant colors, making it a striking example of modern Japanese folk art that honors classical history.

My photo shows part of a limestone wall panel carved in bas relief from the Fifth Dynasty mortuary temple of king Userkaf at Saqqara, Old Kingdom, 2465-2458 BC. It shows a Hoopoe, a crested bird with black and white wing pattern, and an ibis, with long curved beak, amongst papyrus plants in the marshes of the river Nile. My photo was taken in 2022 at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

A half-length 16th-century portrait of a white-skinned woman in a dark colored gown with red velvet sleeves trimmed in white lace, and a white cap on her head. Her hands are in front of her; the left hand holds a pair of gloves - the text on the museum's object page says "presumably leather, decorated with black and golden embroidery" - and the right plays with the end of a chain that encircles her waist. Tucked between her right arm and her body is a small, mostly white lapdog with long ears and a belled collar. In the top right corner in white caps is the text "CATHARINA DE / HEMESSEN PINGEBAT / 1551."

As I'm attending a conference in Tübingen today, for #findsfriday an #IceAge masterpiece that is on display at the University museum: a tiny but most splendid figurine from the Swabian Jura - a #horse carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago - the oldest known sculpture of a horse.
