π§΅Feels like shouting into the void, but it is essential to note that the Trump/Rubio gutting of the State Department and blowtorching of US diplomatic capacity and credibility is an accelerant to this spiraling war and will seriously undercut US/allied efforts to pick up the pieces after. 1/

Chart showing in many countries, people see their fellow citizens as morally good.
We asked people around the world to rate the morality and ethics of others in their country.
The U.S. is the only place we surveyed where more adults describe the morality and ethics of others living in the country as bad than good. See our full morality report here: www.pewresearch.org/...

So this has happened more than 3 times to me while teaching...I say something and a student says (out loud for the the entire class) "you don't know XYZ thing and you're an English professor?!" Has this happened to you?

I have so many examples of students questioning whether I know enough about a topic to teach it. I asked in faculty meeting "who has been questioned whether they are qualified to teach a class?" The women raised their hands, the men didn't. It's definitely rooted in sexism and racism.

Neural representations of tasks change over time, even in the absence of changes in task performance. But neurons change tuning at different rates. How does a neuron's stability relate to its interactions with the population?

They then spend a significant amount of time smearing IQ by discussing its supposedly racist origins. This is obviously irrelevant to assessing whether itβs a good ideaβPlanned Parenthood was invented by a eugenicist, but this tells us little about whether itβs a good institution. They never discuss the extreme predictive success of IQ, which correlates with a number of important life outcomes. General intelligence is simply the ability to reason well across a number of cognitive domains. AI already has some degree of general intelligence, and its capacities are only going to increase.
Follow the link and you get to this review. Itβs bad and unserious. Alarm bells start really ringing in my head tho when it brings up IQ. I follow the link. It goes to Scott Alexanderβs blog! Thatβs when I remember, I know about this Bentham blog. Written by this guy. A racist ring around the rosy.

Thinking back on my years in market research I can envision numerous tasks where automated text production would've been a benefit in terms of speed - and in some cases where I was transposing data from spreadsheets to text - accuracy. The reasons I can identify those things is because I can write.

When I was in grad school, one of the most powerful people on campus was the "Ruler Lady." At a time when we could only submit complete dissertations as hard copy, this lady would check if the margins/formatting were correct & acceptable.
Today, the room availability booking person is powerful.

Why is touch perceived as weaker during movement?
In our new preprint π, we examine tactile suppression during reaching.
Using optimal control theory, we show that tactile suppression reflects dynamic, uncertainty-dependent integration of forward model predictions and sensory feedback.
