Great article! I lived in Italy for 3 years and it also felt to me that everyone just walked everywhere. Any indication thatβs part of the lower obesity as well?
Lodoicea maldivica
Thank you!
Thanks for the response!
Totally! Why don't we see more short books? I've often wondered if there's some inside baseball in the publishing industry that eschews short books. Any insights?
Can I be added please?
Yes. Thatβs definitely one way of looking at it that holds in many/most cases. Purugganan, who is a great plant scientist studying many domestications, seems to be backing a definition that all domestication arises out of a mutualism.
This being science, Iβm sure some would disagree. :)
Very good definition from Purugganan that defines domestication as a special kind of mutualism.
βa coevolutionary process that arises from a mutualism, in which one species (the domesticator) constructs an environment where it actively manages both the survival and reproduction of another species (the domesticate) in order to provide the former with resources and/or services.β
Also, nice summary of the other insect examples here under the section βInsects and other domesticatorsβ: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Thanks for bringing up this topic and giving me an excuse to look at time of the more recent literature. Itβs such a cool topic!
Hereβs an example of a fish domesticating a shrimp to aid in algal farming: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
I hope that, as we see more GM plants that are:
β‘οΈ More nutritious
β‘οΈ Hardier
β‘οΈ Higher yielding
β‘οΈ Public domain
Genetic modification will be seen as just another plant breeding tool. A very powerful one, that can be, and is often being, used for good.

Iβm excited to be on Blueskyβ¦hoping for amazing sharing about science and related policy (especially plants and ag) with a commitment to civility and open-mindedness. To get the ball rolling, hereβs my take on the legal definition of tomato: π§ͺ
