12/ AB 1537 will help us get ANSWERS.

It will bring needed transparency and create a clear statewide standard that will close this loophole.

Onward!

11/ There are so many questions here that deserve public scrutiny.

Are any local officers already moonlighting as ICE agents?

Have any local officers been involved with mass deportations through participation with the Coast Guard or other DHS agencies?

10/ At this point, we know ICE can use any space it rents or owns to detain people in horrendous conditions, including children.

Running a business that cleans the floors of an ICE detention camp is immoral. Full stop.

"For example, a police officer who owns a small office cleaning company would be barred from contracting with a subcontractor of DHS that rents office space to ICE. Does this really make sense?"

9/ Meanwhile, in this letter from several different police and sheriff associations, thereโ€™s an oddly specific example.

$750k grant for BART had strings attached: ICE cooperation Under court order, FEMA stopped requiring security grantees to collaborate with immigration enforcement on Oct. 21.

8/ Again, DHS agencies are now inseparable from mass deportations. Consider FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which tried to force grantees to agree to collaborate with ICE as a condition for receiving funding! oaklandside.org/2025/11/03/f...

Noemโ€™s focus on meeting the Trump administrationโ€™s deportation quotas appears poised to further impact Coast Guard operations in the coming months, according to new guidance recently issued to Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento this year. Based on DHS priorities, the air station, which is among those responsible for a majority of deportation flights, has designated its first priority to be the transport of detained immigrants on its C-27 aircraft within the U.S., according to multiple U.S. officials familiar with the orders.

The new orders moved search-and-rescue operations, which have long been the Coast Guardโ€™s core mission, to a lower priority, the officials familiar with the orders said. They said counternarcotics efforts and Coast Guard training are prioritized above search-and-rescue operations.

Under Noemโ€™s leadership, more than 750 Coast Guard flights have been redirected from regular missions such as maritime patrols and search-and-rescue efforts, to instead fly detained immigrants to deportation hubs, according to ICE Flight Monitor. Coast Guard flights carrying immigrants jumped last year from 14 in June to 149 in November, according to the group.

6/ NBC reports that Noem has overseen โ€œa tenfold increase in the use of the Coast Guard's aircraft for immigrant deportations.โ€ The numbers are staggering - 750 flights redirected!

Under Trump, Noem, and Steven Miller, ALL agencies of DHS are becoming inseparable from ICE.

Noem's use of Coast Guard resources strains her relationship with the military branch, sources say Some early decisions by the homeland security secretary, including to divert Coast Guard resources from a search-and-rescue mission to the deportation of immigrants, set the tone early.

5/ The LAPPL also mentions a lot of officers are involved in the Coast Guard Reserve, which is part of DHS, ICEโ€™s parent agency.

This new article by NBC News on how DHS is diverting the Coast Guard to assist mass deportations is a must-read! www.nbcnews.com/politics/imm...

For independently elected sheriffs, constitutional officers accountable directly to voters of California's 58 counties, this represents an unwarranted intrusion into local governance and operational decision-making.

3/ So according to the San Bernardino Sheriff, every single Sheriff should set their own policy on exactly when and how a deputy could take a side job working for ICE to abduct our neighbors?

[SB Sheriff opposition letter] Existing law already provides sheriffs and police chiefs with broad authority to review, approve, condition, or deny secondary employment based on conflicts of interest, liability exposure, operational readiness, and public trust. AB 1537 overrides that framework with a statewide prohibition, removing discretion from locally elected sheriffs and municipal leaders and replacing professional judgement with a one-size-fits-all mandate.

2/ San Bernardino Sheriff Shannon Dicus complains the bill would be โ€œremoving discretionโ€ from his dept and others.

โ€œDiscretionโ€ and โ€œlocal controlโ€ for what, exactly?

For deputies to take a second job separating families or working in a detention camp?

The No Side Jobs for ICE Act (AB 1537) is common sense: local law enforcement shouldnโ€™t moonlight for ICE or other agencies abducting our neighbors.

Why are some police and sheriff associations OPPOSING this legislation?

We need to uncover the truth ๐Ÿงต

This bill would close a loophole in state law and prevent local and state law enforcement from taking side jobs with ICE, DHS, or other entities, like private corporations, engaged in abducting our neighbors. We are proud to co-sponsor this bill 2/

Gov. Newsom @governor.ca.gov your state prison system uses racial profiling to gamble w/pplโ€™s lives. Youโ€™ve turned over to ICE U.S. citizens, DV survivors; ppl whoโ€™ve earned release who want to give back.

P.S. free advice: stop trying to sound like Ben Shapiro. That interview was humiliating.

Every single day, ICEโ€™s abuses of power and violence spiral more and more out of control.

Despite the protections weโ€™ve already passed in California, we need to do much more.

AB 1537 will close a troubling loophole in state law.

Let's get this bill passed ASAP! 4/

California bill would bar local officers from taking second job with ICE Supporters of the bill say that California, as a sanctuary state, shouldn't allow its officers to perform immigration enforcement duties.

Today we joined local leaders in SF to support Asm @ib2real.bsky.social's AB 1537, the No Side Jobs for ICE Act. Our coalition is proud to sponsor this important bill.

From widespread reports of ICE kidnappings to the killing of Renรฉe Good, weโ€™ve seen the devastating harm this rogue agency inflicts. Weโ€™re standing w/SF Supe Mahmood to support AB 1537, a critical state bill to protect Californians by preventing local & state law enforcement from
working for ICE.

Statewide coalition will champion bill
to ensure police, sheriffs canโ€™t work side jobs for ICE

The ICE Out of CA Coalition, made up of over 30 organizations across the state, announced that it will sponsor AB 1537 by Asm. Isaac Bryan.

The bill would prohibit state and local law enforcement officers from working โ€œside jobsโ€ with ICE, CBP, DHS, or any other entities engaged in the arrest or detention of Californians, including private security companies which contract with ICE to carry out abductions.

The introduction of the legislation comes as ICE continues to violently terrorize, abduct and harm community members across the country and as the Trump admin. ramps up attempts to dramatically increase the number of deportation agents.

With recent advertising campaigns, ICE has directly sought to recruit police and sheriffs. AB 1537 will shine a light of public scrutiny on these attempts, requiring disclosure of any โ€œoffer of, request for, or attempt at secondary employment that involves assisting with or engaging in immigration enforcementโ€ and ensuring such records are available to the public.

The coalition stated:

โ€œICE is desperately seeking more agents to abduct our neighbors and tear families apart and is actively trying to recruit police and sheriffs. Despite the protections weโ€™ve passed in California, we need to do much more. And this bill addresses one serious loophole: nothing in state law prevents officers from working โ€˜side jobsโ€™ as deportation agents. Asm. Bryanโ€™s bill will provide urgently-needed transparency and set a commonsense statewide policy. We look forward to partnering with the Assemblymember to advance this crucial legislation ensuring law enforcement in California are prohibited from taking side-jobs as ICE agents.โ€

Asm. Bryan:

โ€œIf you take an oath to protect and serve communities in California, you should not be allowed to take a second job with ICE rooted in terrorizing those same communities. Itโ€™s time to close this loophole.โ€
