Fantastic, currently the site of a major redevelopment at York Station Gateway. This view will change but the early water tower will remain.
Kirkham Priory Gatehouse, North Yorkshire. Set by the River Derwent, on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, the priory was established as a house of Augustinian canons in 1120 by Walter l'Espec, Lord of Helmsley. The gatehouse was built c1290-5. There are sculptures of St George and the Dragon to the left and David and Goliath to the right. Above the arch are sculptures of Christ in a pointed oval recess with St Bartholomew to the left and St Philip to the right. the armorials represent noble benefactors, including de Ros, Scrope, de Forz, Fitz Ralph and Espec. The style of the tracery is often referred to as 'Kentish' and is uncommon in northern England.

Open moorland, lightly dusted with snow, under clear blue skies with a low winter sun casting long shadows
After what feels like 6 weeks of gloom and toddler induced illness I finally managed to see some sky yesterday

Glorious day on Ilkley Moor once I escaped the fog bound valleys.
One of my favourite sites in my patch!
Colour photo of the view from inside a grotto at Stourhead, looking out over the lake to a swathe of autumnal trees and a little of the grey sky above. The dark, rocky grotto opening frames the scene.
Time for a reminder!

Persistence of place does not equal 600 houses at the same time.

Hope everyone has a lovely break, however they spend it.
This is really common, in the days of the Royal Commission, especially during WW2 and immediately afterwards, resources were spread thin. Msny buildings weren't accessible and rural monuments often misplotted geographically. That said the original listing/scheduling cards are a gold mine of info
Perhaps Stonehenge filed a copyright infringement lawsuit?
Just realised that its 20 years to the day since a sloe gin fuelled winter solstice finds washing and processing session, at the National Museums Liverpool excavations at Lathom Lancashire.
Where has that time gone!??
Disability campaigner Debbie North sits on a sturdy, allβterrain mobility scooter positioned in front of a wooden gate designed for wheelchairβfriendly access. The scooter has a large, contoured seat, a wide handlebar, and a TGA logo on the front panel. Beside the gate stands another person wearing outdoor clothing, including a dark jacket embroidered with a National Park logo. The gate itself is part of a wellβmaintained access point, with metal latches and a blue accessibility marker fixed to the adjacent wooden post. To the right, an old dryβstone wall covered in patches of green moss runs alongside the path. Beyond the gate, rolling green fields stretch into the distance, with gentle hills rising under a pale sky. The scene conveys outdoor accessibility, inclusive countryside infrastructure, and a welcoming rural landscape.

This session was my favourite of the whole week. Really thought provoking and entertaining at the same time. (I am bias though as Harold used to be my undergraduate lecturer and I work with Rachel!)
