Itβs more interesting to me to allow characters to grow in two different ways, so you have the satisfaction of grinding a skill and seeing improvement, but also the excitement of when a personal objective is accomplished to truly unlock potential in an individual.

Skirmish games often donβt need more nuance than that.
However! What does it truly mean to gain mastery and advance? I think there are two tracks: there is technical mastery attained over repetition of skill usage, and personal mastery when a life goal or objective is accomplished.

I personally enjoy having character advancement being very simple, because I like the world around the character and the events that happen to the character in battle illustrate a story.
A lot of skirmish games only have a few layers of advancement from novice > experienced > expert.

I just had to write down the difference between what it means to master something and advance.
One of the most common problems of TTRGs is power scaling and characters becoming like gods and the world scales and breaks immersion.

Anyways it was very satisfying today to be able to pull a campaign system from my Rogue Trader game, my inventory and weapons system from a fantasy game inspired by Kingdom Death's cards, to create something kind of awesome.

I don't like DnD (shocker), I like following structured rules, play, and let the events of a game tell me a story. I like how to make solo play simple enough where setup isn't cumbersome (Gloomhaven) and rich enough for you to want to spend time playing it over a video game.

Today I'm making another game for myself, but this time I got to reference an older game I made that includes a cycle system that informs players of how to generate a sector of planets, types of planets, the type of story within the sector, the rivals, and objectives and a loop to play through.

In my spare time (lol) one of my hobbies is game design, specifically skirmish or tabletop games. I consistently read rulebooks across a variety of game systems and try to understand or abstract what makes that game work, what makes it interesting, and how to integrate it for my games in the future.

A render of Ann Darrow from Peter Jackson's King Kong for the PS2 (screenshot specifically from Noodle's video about the game)
Monster Hunter Tri
whatever you call this art style - PS2 era medium-poly characters with hand-made highly detailed but also somewhat blurry textures with baked-in lighting - I absolutely love it and it makes me want to drop everything and make games

Not every hobby needs to be monetized. You took a fun, collaborative community and tried to squeeze it for all itβs worth and now youβre realizing that youβll never out-greed Electronic Fucking Arts Inc.

I think thereβs probably some resistance to editing so much because games go so long and have so many games actions, imagine doing something like that π

Thereβs something about the miniature gaming genre of video production that doesnβt work. It has beautiful pieces and all the things youβd imagine to make good videos, but then interrupting every bit of action with dice rolling is like π«

I like to watch miniature gaming videos across a variety of publishers, and I gotta tell yall having two dudes talk in front of a camera with a book open in the middle really doesnβt work when the video is about learning a game

Can we talk about how sick this One Piece game looks? THERE'S EVEN SOLO MODE FOR SOLO GAMERS LIKE ME :D
I also think it's really interesting to use a dicebag with tiles as as a mechanic for players to attain physical rewards directly as part of their game, I haven't seen that before.

this is something I see so few people grapple with. Every instance of supposed rogue behavior in LLMs can be explained by the fact that their training data included thousands of science fiction stories. "omg it's acting just like an AI in a sci fi novel" yeah no shit moron
