27 Ways to Access Scientific Research A complete guide to finding, reading, and evaluating scientific papers — and knowing what questions matter before you trust the findings.

Another great piece by Card Catalog -- most practicing scientists know this, but might be a useful primer for science undergraduate or even graduate students?

Technically, the site of the UN building is not "U.S. soil" but rather international territory. -- ICE is not allowed to enter without permission

Thanks, Matt. Love it
This data nerd contests relationship is "strong" between RPI and expenses -- R-value (linear regression?) is not all that great (0.74) as R^2 says it only explains 50% of variance.
Due in part to plateau at high end but also all those >$1.5M spenders who don't do that great

Fair point, although I will be more sympathetic once fbref and transfermarkt start putting instragram followers in their career stats ... 😇

Agree James is a nice catch for Minnesota United but to call him ‘one of the sport’s most famous active players’ is more than a stretch.

He has been a top player for national team but his club form has been indifferent for the last 10 years

Time to update Orwell’s classic as 2024?

I get so bored re: athletic directors / presidents / coaches all using identical talking points in college athletics

Well, there is also this ...
Denmark confirms an expanded, more permanent Danish and NATO military presence in and around Greenland, beginning today. ... Sweden has committed forces; other NATO allies may follow

Very sorry to hear about your experience. I had my cameras stolen in Rome’s train station 2 months ago. Was very distraught but was not a life-threatening situation like this

No, its another example of how the wants of well-heeled and well-connected boosters trump all else when it comes too college football -- here extending beyond university presidents and trustees to the governor's office

And "best interests of the public" have a long history of not being served in LA

Nice. Curious re this statement about lack of AMR to it
“under conditions that typically lead to resistance against vancomycin”

as I don’t see why subsequent resistance wouldn’t evolve under pressure

Any #archaea #archaeasky lab out there interested in having their Natrialba species sequenced on ONT r10 up to about 3Kx read depth for free? I'll send back annotated assembly, methylation data and raw signal files. I need at least one more species for a paper. Feel free to DM!

Is the cell really a machine? It has become customary to conceptualize the living cell as an intricate piece of machinery, different to a man-made machine only in terms of its supe…

I just came onto this 2019 paper, prepping for my next Think Like a Microbe post -- it is a very interesting and thoughtful counterpoint to Monod's "the cell is indeed a machine"

This comment comes from significantly outside my expertise ... but curious re: how it branches vs. other Halococcus using a Halobacterium sequence as an outgroup vis a vis novel genus

Looks to me like packets of 8?
Is there support for this as novel genus?
Halosarcina

“Latin word "sarcina," meaning pack or bundle, after the cuboidal (2x2x2) cellular associations they form during division along three plane”

Hope you don’t mind suggestion from old-school microbiologist. RE streak plate. I don’t think you are doing enough streaks in quadrants. I would do 3 quadrants with >12 streaks per quadrant to get isolated colonies
