Gotta love getting a new keyboard and ending up bricking it because of bad software. Tried to change lighting & keys, it failed, tried to factory reset, it failed, and now it's bricked.
I think my superpower as a VTuber is that I'm like King Midas, but everything I touch just gets softlocked... π’

I've been having a lot of fun with EmoteLab (made by @0x4682b4.com!), and made a ton of newer emotes using the base model and modifying some of the textures!
It was a bit hard to do at first as I had to change the texture of the eye for each emotion accompanying the emotes, but I did it!

I apologize for not being able to offer more than this, though. I really wish I could give more sources than that, rather than be that "trust me bro" kind of guy in the discussion.
Hopefully someone that does know where to actually search for these can join in the discussion to help further out!

Sampling (music) - Wikipedia
However, what I can link you to, is the base wikipedia page for music sampling, which does cover a couple of lawsuit cases on general music, not just video game ones, as well as the legality and use of sampling in music.

And Google is just as bad as ever nowadays. I just cannot seem to find any proper older sample library anymore (other than things like Splice) because it keeps ignoring my actual keywords and tends to default to "Hip-Hop" sampling instead.
I really wish I could properly give you a VGM source.

The music industry is notoriously opaque when it comes to that kinda stuff, unfortunately.
Knowing what's owned by who is really hard to do. It's to the point where there's a saying in the field: "If you didn't sample it, it belongs to somebody else".

Finally, it's not a question of being disingenuous about anything. I hate this trend like anybody else and wanted to showcase a possible issue rising in VGM.
It's a question of looking as to "why it might happen", and offering a way to discuss on potential ways to "fix things".

So, again, I will repeat this for the third time: it's not that it's impossible for them to do better.
Just that it's much harder for them to do so without access to the vast categories of samples the bigger ones own, and if they do want to use them, they will have to pay a pretty penny.

Because those instruments aren't "samples", they are less limited overall in terms of the legal requirements. You can start composing a bit more freely, but with some limitations still on the overall melody.
This is one of the things that started the overall "orchestral trend" that plagues AAA now.

That last part is huge, because if you integrate a sound like that and include that as a part of a song, but that sound gets claimed, you lose a corner piece of the song. It "doesn't sound the same".
This is why, nowadays, a lot of the industry has started using "actual instruments" for BGMs.

Here's an example. Let's say, you want to integrate a "coin" sound into a track. This can also apply to melodies but hmo.
You first have to create the sound. Then you have to make it "sound good". Then you have to compare it to other coin sounds to make sure you're not infringing on anybody's work.

It's not just a question of "recycling tracks". It's a question of "samples", and reusing certain particular iconical sounds that can potentially ruin an entire score if claimed.
Big companies own a lot of those, and the rest of the industry have to avoid these major landmines all around.

Nintendo has been reusing their own tracks so they don't run into the same risks as others in the industry, same for Square, though they do make some good new tracks because they have some truly talented people there.
It's not that it's "impossible", just that it is harder and harder to do nowadays

So ultimately, they've kind of painted themselves in a corner, and now are paying the price, through this stupid trend.
They definitely need to stop the "orchestra for game awards" BS, and start experimenting a bit more with newer instruments and sets to make songs to truly resonate.

Orchestralizing literally everything, even when it doesn't fit the moment.
There's proper genres that you can use, proper sets that convey different emotions, instruments that can change a song radically if they went missing or drowned in 10 different instrument tracks.
This has to change.

Not to say that they should be able to outright steal songs or anything, though.
It's just that they're running out of room to make songs of, and they can't seem to find new, creative ways to make interesting pieces because of those legal limitations.
There's another very big culprit for that.

As much as I like to hate on AAA, I think the main reason why they're struggling to get unique scores out is because we're kind of running out of room to be truly "unique".
Anything that comes too close to an existing sample can lead to lawsuits, which in turn completely stifles future attempts.

I agree. Linearity and insufferable characters (Hope & Vanille) aside...
The game actually has a compelling story and characters (Sazh πβ€οΈ), the battle system is challenging, and it does open up a fair bit afterwards as well.
FFXIII-3 did best dad dirty tho.

ALTTP, Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening, in that order.
Those pretty much iterated and did unique things that still resonate with people to this day.
Honorable mention to Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, though, as WW had a very fun way to explore a world and TP had the best GDork fight of all.

Finally done! Both X3 and X4 are completed (at least, X's side)!
While X3 is still as infuriating as ever, X4 was a delight! The overall design is fair (unlike X3), gorgeous to see (more than the previous games) and enjoyable (unlike X3)!
I'm really glad X3 didn't just tank the whole series!

Today, we get our revenge on X3, and finishing what might be one of the worst Megaman games in the whole series. We only have the final Doppler stages to do before hopping on X4, which hopefully will be better designed!
Let's give it our best floofin' shot!

On top of causing major issues for open source projects and bug bounty programs as well, leading to some closing (curl being the one being most talked about).
There's a genuine pushback that goes beyond just "hating the tech". There's concrete damage being caused today, let alone tomorrow & after.

Funny thing is that you can clearly see the "pressure" Discord is right now with this. Bundles and sales like these only happen when it's too late... and never for the user itself, but for the (future) shareholders (in this case).
"Please, don't leave us, we'll make X cheaper for you!"

I think of Gradius, Twin Bee and NES TMNT in my case...
But I will say, Konami did get a small spike in popularity at the SNES (Super Contra, Castlevania IV)...
then came the PS1, where they released banger after banger: Suikoden, Symphony of the Night, Vandal Hearts, Beatmania, Metal Gear...

It's been a long while, but yeah, now I don't touch anything StreamElements sponsorships related anymore(even through the Twitch Sponsorship collab program), or anything StreamElements related, really.
It's not worth the hassle, unless you really like the games anyway.

It's really funny, because not only do they pay much less for the sponsorship than the market rate, but they sometimes don't pay at all even if people were to join.
I've had one of my Genshin Impact sponsorships payouts denied because "there wasn't enough people" when I had double the min req'd.

SlimeVR Butterfly Trackers Launch Trailer
YouTube video by SlimeVR
The amount of work that SlimeVR is putting to make 3D Tracking less painful and less expensive is just crazy. Just took a look at the latest video trailer for their butterfly trackers and this looks simply amazing.
I might grab some to try for my VTuber on Warudo.
