You and I can agree it’s greedy, but if we’re comparing both strategies, one of them benefits me more than the other. So I prefer that one.
Obviously if I could just have free maps AND cosmetics, that’d be better.

I am aware the businesses that run these games are greedy. But they’re going to have some kind of monetization in their multiplayer shooter, so as to make money. So, if it’s going to be cosmetics instead of map packs, I’m personally okay with that trade as I think it’s the better system of the two.
It is tho. Thats the monetization route that multiplayer shooters have taken. They no longer charge for maps or weapons or any gameplay content because INSTEAD they are charging for battlepasses instead.

My entire point is and always has been that paid cosmetics existing are annoying but since they are the thing that gets us free maps, weapons, and game modes in games like COD or Battlefield, I think they’re worth putting up with.

Free maps, weapons and modes is just better. I understand you’re upset that they’re selling cosmetics, and sure that’s annoying if you like that stuff.
What I’m saying is, I prefer to keep the community together and get all the actual gameplay content for free.

I was there for Oblivion’s horse armor. I remember.
I also remember being kicked out of COD lobbies because a DLC map I didn’t have came up in rotation. I remember trying to play MW3 years after release and having to uninstall all DLC because there are more players in the base game playlist.
Free maps, weapons and modes as well as not separating the player base is not anti-consumer. It’s absolutely good for the playerbase at large.
I don’t think cosmetics are nearly as important as that (especially since BF6 the game in question has TONS of free unlockable cosmetics)
If they stopped selling skins they’d just go back to paid dlc and I don’t want that. It splits the community, and that is always a bad thing with any multiplayer game.
I’d rather they make their money off of cosmetics I don’t care about instead of locking actual content behind a paywall.
It is, that’s why games like these stopped charging for DLC maps and weapons after battlepasses and skin stores became the norm.
You can say BF6 isn’t making maps fast enough, but hell, COD is releasing 7-8 maps per season all free and the playerbase doesn’t have to split up.

These optional skins and battlepasses are the reason why every new map and weapon is released for free, so that’s an EASY trade off for me.
No playerbase split being the BEST part about free maps.

Marathon at least isn’t free to play, and is currently the 2nd best selling game on Steam just behind RE9, so if they make enough money at launch they should be okay even if they don’t hold a billion players afterward.
I’d argue Geoff got more eyes on the game than it ever would have had otherwise. Don’t forget 2M people tried this game at launch, and all decided it wasn’t for them. At that point it’s 100% on the studio and publisher for making a bad game
