Gotta love an excrescent stop joke #linguistics #phonetics
Yeah but most importantly, is Grogu going to talk in the new movie?

And then a huge Fuck Ice bike ride passed our group. So glad New York is stepping up. #ICEOut
A whistle given to me at the Public Theater’s People’s Filibuster event
Just heard a reading of the 4th Amendment at the People’s Filibuster by the Public Theater, right after someone gave me this whistle to put on my keychain. I hate this timeline so so much.
This What Next, TBD podcast with @lizzieohreally.bsky.social and @willsommer.bsky.social was also pretty eye opening w.r.t the extent to which ICE actions are directed by content creators. I had no idea.

LOL, this reminds me that when my son was little, he always used to say "my mom" all the time, even in conversation with his other parent (e.g. "My mom wants me to brush my teeth") and it sounded so weird.
I love how New Yorkers are wishing each other Happy New Year and Happy New Mayor all in the same text.
He wouldn't be the first.

Will you be there, Jessi? Will you speak on behalf of all of those who cannot be there to explain that words mean something, and WOTY should therefore definitely mean something? 😅

I'm not the only one on Bluesky saying this, but maybe together we can bring it into being: Brad Lander for first deputy mayor in the Mamdani administration.
NYC marathon signs reading "Here's that attention you ordered" and "If a marathon were easy it'd be called Your Mom"
Some spicy ones at Mile 8 too!
This man hates this city.
Imagine running for a mayor in a city where between 600 and 700 languages - some of whom are some of the last speakers in the world - and going "diversity can be a weakness"
Oh, what timing!

Curtis Sliwa in the NYC Halloween parade
Even Sliwa was at the parade in the Village
Fine if someone mispronounces it the first time. But NY politicians like Hochul, Sliwa and Cuomo have been having to say this name for so many months now that there’s no excuse for making mistakes on this phonotactically legal-in-English name other than…well you know.
NYC linguists give the linguistic answer, but also patiently explain why this isn't an excuse:
“We can learn hard names. We can do it. We can figure out how the spellings map to the sounds. We can all get there. We just have to practice.” - @laurelmack.bsky.social

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?
anyway that’s why these events are important

And if youʻd like a (much) deeper dive, hereʻs a conversation with Dr. Larry Kimura and Haʻalilio Solomon (at the University of Hawaiʻi, who I have recently been working with), sponsored by

I'm enjoying this thread about the greatest lyricists, but I can't include John Prine ever since I learned about Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian.
If you’ve ever asked AI to summarize a paper, you know it provides only a surface-level and uncritical description. Even if you asked it for a review, what criteria would it use to provide meaningful critical feedback? If it said “X is unclear”, how would you know humans would feel that way?
