Great thread. And a source of optimism for the EU's capacity to act: Even when it fails on its preferred means, it can still deliver big on the ends, by finally creatively and confidently using the "coalition of the willing" blueprints enshrined in its treaties. That's a way forward. 🇪🇺

I'm all for uncomfortable means (reasonable amount of flattery) if that's what it takes to achieve the ends (keep the US in), but this is simply excessive and embarrassing. There's a balance to it - if you overdo it, you just signal subjugation and lose respect for the institution you represent.

"Not the restoration of the SU is Putin's goal but to destroy the west. The first major battlefield is in 🇺🇦, and he will come after you as well. The biggest mistake a human being can make is to believe it cannot hit you. I'm afraid it will."

EU debates return to Russian gas as part of Ukraine peace deal Advocates say reopening pipelines could help settlement with Moscow and cut energy costs

“It’s madness. How stupid could we be to even think about that as an option?”

⚡️EU officials debate restart of Russian pipeline gas as part of a possible Ukraine peace deal. Backers say may cut energy costs + push Moscow to talk, but idea's drawn backlash from Kyiv allies. www.ft.com/content/a19a...

🇩🇪 policy on #Ukraine needs to reflect this lesson
- & this support 🇺🇦 to win.

“ those who take “never again” as referring to war rather than genocidal, expansionist dictatorship

ignore the fact that in #Germany’s case the former was necessary to stop the latter.”

Absolutely! And in doing so, our values provide a compass to determine - or indeed are - our longer-term interests. Once realized & properly communicated, prioritizing investments to boost (integrated) security whilst deprioritizing certain tempting short-term interests becomes politically easier.

Sadly, this still applies.
- it really beggars belief that #Germany’s chancellor still doesn’t see why Ukraine’s victory (& properly arming it to achieve that) is firmly in Germany’s interest
- as well as being the right thing to do.
We lay out why here
