On the 3rd of March, the MRC teamed up with several Faculty of Arts departments for the Set the Pace Showcase, a celebration of the University of Warwick's largest philanthropic campaign yet.

Statement of support for the British Paralympic Association's appeal for funding for the 1992 Barcelona games: The NUM have declared their support for the British Paralympic Association's Appeal. At their NEC meeting on 8th November, £100 was donated to the Appeal and a pledge given to approach all the regional organisations of the Union, seeking their support and financial help. All donations will be used to assist the British Paralympic team who will be participating in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games. Peter Heathfield, General Secretary of the NUM, commenting said: "The mining industry has more than its share of seriously disabled men, victims of a hostile working environment. We have always looked after our seriously disabled members, trying to help them overcome their disabilities and have been proud of those of our members selected to participate in such activities. I hope the Appeal is successful enabling more and more disabled people from the country to participate in Barcelona 1992"".

A timely find in the archives of NUM Secretary Peter Heathfield!

In 1990 the National Union of Mineworkers gave financial support to the newly formed British Paralympic Association. 'Disability sport' had strong mining links, with competitive events a key part of coal industry welfare provision.

'Africa says no'... 'Campaign against this nuclear madness'

In 1959 the anti-nuclear and anti-colonial movements combined in London to oppose French nuclear tests planned for the Algerian Sahara. The first tests took place in 1960 - during the Algerian war of independence against France.

Context is key with archives and, by itself, this image raises lots of questions with few certain answers.

Who was the dapper Miss Ross of Dornoch? Was this a cycling disguise to avoid undue attention, one-off fancy dress, or a deeper part of her identity?

Julia Varley, expert flipper of pancakes, was also a suffragette and trade unionist.

She was active in the National Federation of Women Workers and the Workers' Union, serving as chief women's officer of the TGWU from 1929 to 1936. #ShroveTuesday #PancakeDay

Summary of the Civil Commissioners all over the Country: Food supplies normal. Men are being recruited at all the principal centres. In some parts of the country mails were stranded when train services were stopped and were taken up and completed by road. Reuter Central News. The Trades Union Congress General Council were in session. The General Council assembles at Eccleston Square this morning. They were joined by the three Miners' officials, Mr. Richardson, Mr. A.J. Cook and Mr. Herbert Smith, and at 11 a.m. by Mr. Ramsay MacDonald and Mr. Arthur Henderson. Great privacy was observed about the proceedings of the Council, the outer door was closed and press men were not allowed inside. Messages from all parts of the country indicate that the stoppage is practically complete. People who possess no means of locomotion walk to work. Milk food control shows the following information: There is every reason to believe that it will be possible to maintain a satisfactory supply of milk to all hospitals, schools, restaurants, etc and private consumers. In view of the necessity of arranging transport by road the price of milk will be increased by 6d per gallon wholesale, and 2d per quart retail.
