Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeareโ€™s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Nine More Higher Ed Names in the Epstein Files Through coffees, phone calls and private flights, at least nine more academics are linked to Jeffrey Epstein in the latest disclosure of documents from the Justice Department.

This is a harrowing look at Epstein's connections to academia. It shows how Epstein was able to woo high-profile scholars with witty banter, promises of research funding, and help from a well-connected literary agent, despite not having a degree himself.

I have accidentally looked at Epstein files that are open access and anyone can look at them at will. Goodness gracious, the scale of how abhorrent and ghastly they are. Itโ€™s not only individuals, entire institutions and funding bodies like Guggenheim Fund are involved.

I thank my Indigenous fellow decolonial thinkers, Rick Harp, Candis Callison, Zoe Todd and Kim TallBear whose solidarity mean the world to me. It is always a pleasure to share space with you: to challenge coloniality and explore more generative ways of living and working otherwise.

She fought forIndigenous voices at the UN. Now sheโ€™s in a Russian jail cell. Observers say Daria Egerevaโ€™s case highlights the risks Native advocates face when they challenge the powerful.

Russian authorities have detained an Indigenous climate advocate, accusing her of participating in a terrorist organization in what international observers are calling โ€œretributionโ€ for her UN advocacy on behalf of Indigenous peoples.

"Beyond Fires and Floods (BFF): Indigenous Narratives in an Era of Extremes"

FRI OCT 24 at 6:30 pm, Museum of Anthropology, UBC

FREE public event: No RSVP needed

How have Indigenous narratives helped Indigenous peoples cope with and confront climate change? What does it mean to see and story climate change not so much as a problem, but as a symptom? Drawing on a century-plus of collective storytelling experience across multiple realms and locations, this seasoned panel will discuss how Indigenous narratives reframe and resist mainstream mediaโ€™s preoccupation with extreme weather events to instead forefront what legacy newsrooms all but ignore: the colonial conditions, institutions and infrastructures surrounding these events.

PANELISTS

* Judi Kochon (Sahtรบ) has over 40 years of experience as a journalist, and is currently the Sahtรบ Language announcer and Director of Radio for CKLB in Yellowknife

* Paul Seesequasis (Willow Cree) is an author, editor, journalist, curator, and founder of the online Indigenous Archival Photo Project

* Tanya Talaga (Anishinaabe) is an award-winning journalist, author, filmmaker, and columnist for The Globe and Mail

* Mark Trahant (Shoshone-Bannock) has worked for more than 50 years as a journalist, columnist, and editor, most recently as Editor-at-Large for Indian Country Today (ICT)
โ€จModerator:

* Longtime journalist Rick Harp (Cree) has hosted/produced the Indigenous current affairs podcast MEDIA INDIGENA since 2016. He also hosts the APTN News Brief podcast.

It was an honour to be part of the plenary for the 9th meeting of Portuguese Anthropological Association held in Viana do Castelo. If it was not an invitation by Prof Cristiana Bastos, President of the Association, I would not have ever discovered the stunning city of Viana do Castelo ๐Ÿ™Œโค๏ธ

Congratulations to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and to New York for showing us how itโ€™s done and also giving the worst people in the world a very bad night.

Just found out Zohran Mamdani said heโ€™d arrest Netanyahu if he lands in NYCโ€”because no war criminal should be above the law. Thatโ€™s the kind of courage we need in a mayor. A city that stands for human rights, not genocide.
