Recently learned that, in Portugal, a legally allowed name for girls is βExcelβ (for boys, only βExelβ, sorry). What are all you nerds waiting for
We need an eternal moratorium on tech or media literacy as solutions to problems that are literally about how the entirety of our societies are built. "Literacy" is not going to stop individual people buying into gender stereotypes or ideological views that everything around us teaches us are right.
Finding out that god asking people to do referee reports is even worse than getting requests for referee reports
Today would be a great day to join your union (if your workplace is unionized).
No reason. It's just always a good day to join a union.
I also make related points about the nature of epistemic normativity and the role of the social in my review of @msimion.bsky.social's book Resistance to Evidence \end
It is a kind of companion piece to my "Resistant Beliefs, Responsive Believers" paper, which develops the same view but focuses on how building evidence-responsiveness into belief can better help us understand why beliefs so often stubbornly resist the evidence. 4/
The chapter also speaks to the question of the roots of epistemic normativity. And it does all this in a naturalistic and non-intellectualist way: it accepts animal belief, does not require language for belief, and fits with mass irrationality. 3/
I offer a bunch of reasons for thinking that beliefs are responsive to evidence, based on the idea that the concept of belief marks the space of reasons. The argument is an expansion of Edward Craig's approach to knowledge, bringing social epistemology to the study of the nature of belief 2/
Look at this sexy new volume on "WTF is belief?" - a crucial question for understanding persuasion, irrationality, propaganda, religion, misinfo, you name it! I have a chapter in it. 1/
The chapter also speaks to the vexed question of the source of epistemic normativity. And it does this in a non-intellectualist, naturalist way: on my picture, animals can have beliefs, language is not a req, and mass irrational belief is possible.
Chapter here! 3/
I give a bunch of reasons for thinking that beliefs have to be responsive to evidence, all coming from the basic thought that the concept of belief marks the space of reasons. The argument is a kind of expansion from Edward Craig's approach to knowledge. 2/

The pronoun practice we will have in queer utopia is *obviously* referring to everyone as "comrade"
Just realized analytic philosophy is not actually hard to define. Itβs basically a specific set of dry geeky lore: fake barns, brains in vats, cleverly disguised zebras, swampmen, blockheads, a scientist who never saw red, etc. and then we write fanfic.

This looks like truly fantastic work.
My pet theory of "why do people think the economy is doing poorly despite unprecedented levels of wealth?" is because everyone knows they're getting shorted.

The correct attitude that one should take toward AI is as a left technocrat. Be relentlessly empirical about the powers and pitfalls of the technology, but do not forget the contingent material circumstances that shape its deployments.
Incidentally, I am a left technocrat.
