Priority Communication Spring 2025: Aloft. Photocopy collage 'zine. Front cover features a surreal collage image including a girl with a broom launching into the air, and flying over mountains containing imagery of women doing tasks that tend to be traditionally assigned to women more than men. This work is inspired by a set of vintage action verb vocabulary cards I found, featuring strikingly sexist depictions of everyday tasks. The cards depict men or boys performing most of the actions by far. The few cards featuring women or girls are consistently related to homemaking, secretarial work, nursing, teaching, or childcare. I felt especially awful for the solitary sweeping girl. The boys were playing, riding, climbing, wrestling, and here was this hardworking girl trapped in a vocabulary box for sixty years, just sweeping. She reminds me that in 2025, many women are still struggling to get the men and boys in our families and communities to take equal responsibility for homemaking and emotional labor. This work is primarily dedicated to the women I know who grew up in times and places where they were not even allowed to wear pants to school, not allowed to have a credit card, not allowed to play many sports. This work is also dedicated to girls, women, and anyone embracing, de-emphasizing, or discarding any gender identity today. We are dealing with regressive policies limiting our access to reproductive healthcare, education, and freedom of expression. Time to make more art! Shout out to the Forest Grove City Library for providing excellent resources for local makers, including a high quality photocopier.

We cannot make it into Portland at noon on March 4th, so we will wave signs at the big flag in Forest Grove on our lunch break. If anyone wants to join us, I cannot be there until about 12:20 pm but it would be great if folks who are available could start at noon.
