Meet The Female Journalist Risking Her Life To Report On Women In Afghanistan
Pollsters trying to gauge London borough elections outcomes won't get Newham (or Redbridge) right if they don't recognise challenge of local Independents. Here's @lewisbaston.bsky.social on Newham Inds taking a seat from Lab even *before* Gaza-Israel war began: www.onlondon.co.uk/newham-two-b....
On #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate women. Paths they tread and their achievements. Little girl me never imagined i’d one day sit in Parliament, standing up for women & girls. But I am, thanks to generations of other women who fought, spoke up, & refused to accept things couldn’t change.

Something any half decent ward organiser should have picked up from the doorstep.
Unfortunately the party seems obstinately and inanely obsessed with talking to itself about it's "values".
I could not agree more with the conclusion to this excellent piece from a serving Labour MP who actually understands public opinion. The party has got stuck veering back (and now perhaps forth) on the social dimension but that is not what will win back voters. They need to focus on economy full stop
"wherever we are on social issues, whichever flank we worry about, unless we are obsessing over economic insecurity, we’re not on the pitch."
"Socially conservative, economically insecure voters are moving towards Reform.
Socially liberal, economically insecure voters are moving towards the Greens.
The mainstream parties, by contrast, are mostly holding onto their economically secure voters."
Have been a bit frustrated by some of the conversation about Labour's voter coalition.
I've written about who the "Hero Voters" actually were, how we won them, and what we need to do to earn their support next time.

ICYMI earlier, there's been a great review of my new book on the Blair years and the Third Way in @thenewworldmag.bsky.social... I think there's a whole new and exciting field of study opening up here, and I'm glad it's getting a good reception.

Another philosophical post - but an important one. It examines issues of the individual and the collective, the links between gestalt and anthro-complexity and more. thecynefin.co/from-gestalt...
Asking this on Bluesky out of laziness, but would any south London/south London adjacent folks who work in tech be interested in taking part in a "work in progress" night to try out new talks? (quick 🧵)
A very good deep dive comparing area-based social policies under both Harold Wilson and Keir Starmer here from @historyandpolicy.bsky.social. Strong recommend.

Striking that Reform have now overtaken Labour as the party people would most like to vote against - very much matches what we heard in Gorton with many voters primary concern less merits of Lab/Green but who could best stop Reform.
*Academics of Bluesky:* Do you know a great UG/PG student with excellent quants skills?
@nspmartin.bsky.social and I are advertising a great fully-funded PhD on MRP and minority voting with our friends at Ipsos, so send them our way! ✌️

Problem is there's absolutely zero cost to being wrong over and over again so it won't matter.
"When FBI Director Kash Patel fired a dozen FBI agents and staff last week for their role in the classified documents investigation of Donald Trump, he targeted an elite counter espionage unit that investigates threats from foreign adversaries and specializes in Iran..."

it's almost time for SRECon26, which means it's been less than a year since @ferd.ca and i were delivering the closing keynote at SRECon25.
my perspective has changed A LOT since then, and the advice i would give has changed too. i wrote it up here.

Melania Trump is chairing a UN Security Council meeting.
I'm not joking.
The US currently holds the presidency of the council and that's who Trump chose as chair.
I've just returned from Cleethorpes - a forces town.
People were very apprehensive about getting drawn into a conflict initiated by a US president in whom they had very little confidence.

The lesson from Gorton & Denton is my view from The Overton Window.
Although those who've read up on their of political history will recall that when a leader calls a "who governs election" an unpredictable electorate is just as likely to throw back the answer "not you."

Yesterday, I wrote the first half of a two-parter on the second edition of "Observability Engineering".
Yes, it's twice as long as the first one (oops) but I think it's a *much* better book.

As the analysis starts of the Gorton and Denton result, I wanted to flag some aspects that my experience yesterday suggests are being over or under-played
(Caveats - I went to Longsight, Gorton and Denton town centres and spoke to as many people as I could, but it was mostly during the working day)
