#CefasScience - a perspective on the potential for the #bluetransformation to lend to significant #OneHealth benefits felt by society, nature and the wider environment
#OneHealthAquaculture
www.frontiersin.org/journals/aqu...
The crux of it -
ββ¦.For a #bluetransformation at the national level, recognising that watercourses are a food production medium (like soil) rather than a convenient route for waste disposal is a fundamental first stepβ
#CefasScience #OneHealth
'...a potentially lower food safety risk of consumption (of aquatic protein) compared to other meats'
Can the #bluetransformation reduce the risk of zoonotic pandemics??

Despite urgent needs for #ClimateAction, adaptation finance for fisheries & aquaculture remains much lower than the $4.5B needed by 2030.
Stronger, targeted climate finance is essential to turn solutions into action π buff.ly/Zj8HTqH

'the cold-blooded nature of these hosts and their taxonomic distinction from mammals (including humans) supports a similarly distinct viral profile, with relatively few taxa likely to have zoonotic (or pandemic) potential'

Ever notice small scale #aquaculture (SSA) doesn't seem to get much attention? Us too. We ran a semi-quant synthesis of the the literature and found it is poorly defined, missing from the US & Europe, & underrepresented in marine systems (e.g., oysters) dx.doi.org/10.1111/raq....
π Ocean warming threatens the viability of 60% of Antarctic ice shelves
If global temps stay <2 Β°C, nearly all 64 ice shelves survive by 2300. But above ~4.5 Β°C, ocean melt causes 38 shelves to collapse by 2300, risking up to 10 m sea level rise.

Graphic with two parts. Panel 1 is a map of the Bering sea, showing that the cold pool was much smaller between June and August of 2018 and 2019 than it was on average during the summer from 1993 to 2013. The map also shows the area of an annual survey of the snow crab population, which intersects partially with the cold pool. Panel 2 shows two line graphs comparing the average cold pool area with the snow crab population from 1992 to the early 2020s. The cold pool area dropped to its lowest point in summer 2018, and the snow crab population plummeted the following year.
Warmer waters in the Bering Sea caused snow crabs to crash. Now, scientists are racing to predict the future of the lucrative fishery.

Hazardous chemicals & waste donβt just harm the planet β they affect our health too.
The Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions work together to protect people and the environment from these dangers.

Cover of the 2025 EATβLancet report, featuring an image of a person scooping up green vegetables in their hands from a large plate. The report quote: βThe targets of the EATβLancet Commission for healthy people on a healthy planet with just food systems can only be met through concerted global action and unprecedented levels of transformative change.β
The world produces enough food, yet billions lack access to healthy & sustainable diets. A new EATβLancet report presents a science-based approach to improve health, safeguard our environment & provide for a projected 9.6 billion people by 2050.
